She and her husband, Geoffrey Bant have lived in Urbana since moving here for grad school in the late 1970s. He is the retired director of Printing Services for the U of I and teaches pottery for the Champaign Park District They are the parents of two sons, Jason, 24, who will be attending grad school at Northwestern University next fall, and Alex, a senior at Urbana High School.


Before assuming her current duties at Uni, Marilyn was the Executive Director of the C-U Community Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence and taught journalism at Uni. She previously worked at the U of I Foundation and the U of I College of Agriculture. Before that, she was Features Editor for The News-Gazette and Urbana City Reporter for the now-defunct C-U Courier. Bant has a bachelor's degree in Journalism from Northern Illinois University and a master's degree journalism and political science from the University of Illinois.
