Academic Probation may happen without a student havING been on academic mentoring.
Purpose and Procedures — The purpose of academic probation is to provide the means for students to improve their academic performance so they do not remain on probation. Procedures and responsibilities have been developed to help facilitate communication among student, teachers, counselor, parent(s)/ guardian(s), and administrators.
• Criteria for Academic Probation: A student will automatically be placed on academic probation when his or her academic performance, measured by quarter grade reports, falls to a grade of “F” in one or more subjects or falls to a “D” in two or more subjects.
• Conference: In each school year, the first time a student is placed on academic probation, a conference will be scheduled with the student, his or her parent(s)/guardian(s), a counselor, the Assistant Director, and teachers and coaches or sponsors of extra curricular activities the affected student is involve in. . The purpose of the conference will be to review the reasons for the student’s poor academic performance and to outline strategies for improvement. This may include loss or limitation of privileges such as free periods and extracurricular activities. A letter summarizing the conference and remediation program will be distributed to the student, his/her parent(s)/guardian(s), the student’s current teachers, and the executive teachers.
• Monitoring of Progress: In addition to this conference, a student on academic probation for the first time in a year will be monitored through weekly academic progress reports completed by teachers. Copies of these progress reports will be mailed to the student’s parent(s)/guardian(s). The student is also required to meet weekly with the teacher(s) in whose class the student earned a “D” or an “F.” It is the responsibility of the student to make the arrangements to meet with the teacher, and attendance will be noted on the weekly progress reports. The student will also be required to meet with the counselor and/or Assistant Director on a regular basis to discuss academic progress. The student may also be assigned to teacher supervision during the academic probation period.
• Limitation of Extracurricular Activities: A student placed on academic probation may be limited in the participation of extracurricular activities as stated in University Laboratory High School regulations regarding “Student Involvement in IHSA/Non-IHSA Activities.” See Physical Education Department for current IHSA rules.
• Repeat Probation: If a student is placed on academic probation again during the academic year (including 4th quarter), an academic review will be conducted by the Assistant Director. The Assistant Director will seek input from the student’s teachers before making a recommendation to the Director/Principal. The recommendation may range from continuance at Uni High with or without program modifications to an academic review hearing.
Responsibilities — Student and parent(s)/guardian(s) are responsible for several aspects of the probation program.
• Student: The student must make every effort to complete homework promptly, seek help as he/she feels the need, meet on a weekly basis with the teacher(s) in whose class the student earned a “D” or below, and attend meetings with counselors and teachers. The student is responsible for making arrangements for the weekly meeting with his or her teacher(s).
• Parent(s)/Guardian(s): Parent(s)/guardian(s) need to encourage the student, provide an environment at home conducive to study, and maintain close communication with school personnel regarding the student’s progress.
• Teachers: Teachers are an integral part of the probation program. The teachers need to meet with the student as arranged by the student on a weekly basis, complete the weekly progress reports, and communicate with the student, parent(s)/guardian(s), counselor, and administrators. Any specific questions that the student or parent(s)/guardian(s) have about the content of a progress report should be directed to the teacher.
• Guidance Counselor: The guidance counselor often provides the linkage between all of the participants in the probation program. He/she meets regularly with the students on probation, collects weekly progress reports and mails them to parent(s)/guardian(s), and communicates concerns if problems develop with the probation program. The counselor has the prime responsibility for monitoring the remediation of students on academic probation.
• Assistant Director: The Assistant Director is responsible for the administration of the probation program. He or she will monitor the progress of the student. The Assistant Director will also conduct an academic review of all students who are placed on academic probation two or more times during one academic year (including 4th quarter). Based on input received during the academic review, the Assistant Director will make a decision regarding the future of the student at Uni High. The Assistant Director’s recommendation may range from continuance at Uni High with or without program modifications to an academic review hearing.
