7.19 ILLEGAL BEHAVIOR*

In the case of misconduct classified under “Illegal Behavior,” a dismissal review committee must be convened. Illegal behaviors include being found in the school or on school property at times that would involve breaking and entering; being under the influence of drugs or alcohol in school; possession, transporting or use of a controlled substance; misuse of prescription drugs possession of drug paraphernalia on campus or off campus while under the jurisdiction of the school; possession or consumption of an alcoholic beverage on campus or off campus while under the jurisdiction of the school; possession of alcohol or drugs with intent to disseminate to other students; violation of the laws of the State of Illinois; threatening faculty, staff or students.
It is also a crime to possess or store on school property any weapon without prior written permission from the Chief Security Officer for the Urbana-Champaign University of Illinois Office. A weapon is defined as including the following: pistol, revolver, rifle, spring gun, shotgun, or any other firearm, sawed-off shotgun, stun gun or taser, knife with a blade of at least 3 inches in length, dagger, dirk, switchblade knife, stiletto, or any other deadly or dangerous weapon or instrument of like character, or “look alikes” of any weapon as defined above (including Section 24-1 of the Criminal Code). Such items as baseball bats, pipes, bottles, locks, sticks, pencils, and pens may be considered weapons if used or attempted to be used to cause bodily harm. The University of Illinois also considers souvenirs and weapons which have been rendered permanently inoperative to fall within this law, as well as any bomb, bombshell, grenade, bottle or other container containing an explosive or noxious substance. A student who is determined to have brought a weapon to school shall be expelled for a period of not less than one year, except that the expulsion period may be modified by the disciplinary review committee on a case by case basis.
Listed below are some examples of gross disobedience or misconduct which are illegal:
False alarms, Alcohol related violations, Arson, Drugs related violations, Extortion, Gambling, Gang related activities, Harassment, intimidation and sexual harassment, Physical confrontation with staff or students, Property damage/vandalism/littering, Theft/stealing, Threats to/or intimidation of staff or students, Trespassing/loitering, Weapon related activities, and Computer tampering.
All illegal behaviors within the school must be reported to the University of Illinois Police Department by phone or in person. Violators and suspects will be interviewed by UIPD with a representative of the school present. Parent(s)/guardian(s) of minors will be notified if their student is a suspect. Students found guilty of illegal behaviors will be sanctioned according to Uni’s disciplinary system and actions by the State Attorney’s Office.
