n    Policy for Participation in Graduation — In order to participate in graduation ceremonies at University Laboratory High School, students must have completed all graduation requirements in effect upon initial enrollment at Uni. The Consumer Education requirement must be completed by May 1. Exceptions may be made for students who will complete the requirements by the end of the summer following the senior year. In such cases, the student should request special approval to participate in the graduation ceremonies. Such requests should be made to the Assistant Director, in writing, as soon as it is clear that graduation requirements will not be met by the date of the graduation ceremonies.

If the Assistant Director concludes that it is feasible that the student will be able to complete graduation requirements with a grade of “D” or better by the end of the summer following the student’s senior year, the request to participate in graduation ceremonies may be approved. The student could be permitted to participate in the graduation ceremonies, but will not receive an actual diploma until all graduation requirements have been met.

n    Consumer Education —All Illinois students must complete the State of Illinois Consumer Education requirement.  Uni’s regular course work provides most of the required instruction; however, some topics are not covered in our curriculum.  A Uni student will have two ways of completing the rest of the State of Illinois Consumer Education requirement:  Proficiency test or  on-line instruction

• Proficiency Test:  All students are eligible for one attempt to test out of consumer education by taking the Illinois Consumer Education Proficiency Test, which is administered in Uni every September/October and January.

• On-line instruction completed by May 1 of the graduating year.

n    Early Graduation — Uni students are not allowed to graduate early, unless they can demonstrate extenuating circumstances for such an action.

n    Diplomas — Students completing all graduation requirements, determined by the year in which they entered the school, will receive a diploma from the University of Illinois Laboratory High School. Request for diploma replacements should be made to the Assistant Director.

n    Transcript Requests — Current students can receive a transcript by completing a Student Services Request Form in the Student Services Office. Graduates can receive a transcript by writing or coming to the Student Services Office and requesting a copy.

n    Graduation Requirement Waiver Procedure — Students may petition for waiver of graduation requirements, on a credit-by-credit basis, to the Executive Teacher in the affected department. Exceptions normally will NOT be granted except for substantially equivalent course work completed satisfactorily elsewhere, and then only with prior approval. No credit for waived requirement will appear on the student’s transcript. The procedure for the petition is as follows:

1.  Each petition must be submitted on a form, available from the Student Services Office, to the Assistant Director, stating specifically for which course(s) a waiver is requested, and providing adequate justification for the request (a syllabus and school/teacher contact information). The petition should be submitted at least one month prior to beginning the alternate program (one month before the end of the current school year before a course to be taken the next school year). New students must petition during registration at Uni for course work completed prior to admission.

2. The Assistant Director will route the form to the appropriate Executive Teachers, who will approve or deny the waiver or may ask for changes in the request.

3. Both the petition and the comments of the Executive Teacher will be reviewed by the Assistant Director, who may submit the request to the Curriculum Committee for discussion before making a final decision.

4. Appeals to the decision by the Assistant Director may be addressed to the Director.

5. Agreements to waive a graduation requirement may be withdrawn by the Assistant Director with due cause, such as failure to complete the equivalent course work satisfactorily.
