5.9 LEAVE OF ABSENCE AND TRANSFER GUIDELINES

n    Leave of Absence — The following rules and procedures govern the granting of leaves of absence to students:

• Leaves of absence are limited to either one academic year leave or one semester leave.

• Leaves are granted only when the student’s family temporarily relocates and the student intends to return to Uni after the leave or participates in an academic exchange program approved by the Curriculum Committee.

• Request for a leave must be made to the Assistant Director in writing prior to the beginning of the semester prior to the start of the leave.

• No leaves will be approved for a student’s first year at Uni High (usually the subfreshman year). Admitted students who must request a leave during the first year at Uni will be required to reapply for admission the following year. Deferred admission will not be offered to students.

• Students taking leave must meet all Uni graduation requirements.

• The Assistant Director will develop a leave contract in consultation with the Executive Teachers that must be signed by the Assistant Director, the Executive Teachers, the student and the parent(s)/guardian(s) of the student requesting the leave before the leave request will finally be approved.

• The normal procedure is not to issue University Laboratory High School credit, but to state the leave dates on our transcript and attach relevant information regarding educational progress while on leave (i.e., sabbatical transcript). If course credit and a grade will be given by a Uni teacher or transfer credit granted, this will be part of the leave contract.

n    Transferring — The parent(s)/guardian(s) of a student withdrawing from the school must write a letter to the Assistant Director indicating when the student will no longer attend Uni High and where to send the student’s school records. Only documents in the student’s permanent record are forwarded unless the parent/guardian requests additional information.
