6.3 STUDENT COUNCIL
Home > About Uni > School Policies > Student Handbook > 6.3
The Student Council, comprised of three elected representatives or class officers plus an elected executive board consisting of President, Vice-President and Secretary-Treasurer, oversees many areas of student extracurricular life, including all recognized clubs and organizations. A copy of the bylaws can be obtained from any council member or from the Student Council Parliamentarian. The bylaws were most recently revised in 2001.
n Elections — In the spring of each year, elections are first held for the Student Council Executive Board. (Elections are managed by an elections committee appointed by Student Council. Candidates are encouraged to submit brief biographies as well as position statements and a photo that are published in an election guide distributed in Uni English classes.)
Once a Student Council President, Vice-President and Secretary-Treasurer have been elected for the following year, the subfreshmen, freshmen, sophomores and juniors elect their class officers — President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer and Lounge Committee Representative for the next year. (Elections for new subfreshman representatives are held the following September and are overseen by an elections committee appointed by the new Student Council elected the previous spring. Subfreshmen cannot be elected to the three top executive offices of Student Council.) Any class member may run for a class office, and all class members are eligible to vote. In the case of ties, run-off elections are held.
n Meetings — Class meetings are held at the discretion of the class president in consultation with the class sponsors to plan special events or projects. In addition to presiding at all class meetings (which must be held with faculty class sponsors in attendance), Uni class officers meet weekly as the Student Council with the Executive Board. Class Sponsors must be present for all class meetings. Officers must meet with and consult with class sponsers on a regular basis.
n Agendas — All Student Council meetings are open to all students and faculty. An agenda is written on the blackboard immediately before the start of the meeting. The agenda is generally determined by the Executive Board at a study session held with the Student Council adviser(s) earlier in the week of the meeting. Any member can ask to have items added to the agenda at the beginning of the meeting.
