Home > About Uni > School Policies > Student Handbook > 6.6
Throughout the school year, there are many extracurricular events sponsored by the school and student organizations. These activities include dances,
social events (i.e., Uni Night at IMPE), recitals, assemblies, picnics, movie nights, theme days/weeks, cultural activities (i.e., UMEC Cultural Fair), drama productions, music productions. All activities sponsored by the school must have prior approval by the administration through a signed Special Event Request form. All requests for dances must be approved by Student Council prior to submission to the administration for approval. Participation in extracurricular activities requires attendance in school half of the day. Students are allowed to bring one guest to dances. All school rules and regulations will be applied to the guest.
Procedures for Planning a Special Event — Students organizing special events are expected to adhere to the following procedures:
1. Obtain Special Event Request Form from the Main Office.
2. Check the master calendar in the main office for conflicts. If there is a conflict, please see the Assistant Director for approval before planning or scheduling the event.
3. the form and have the faculty sponsor sign the request form. The faculty sponsor is required to attend the event and to be part of the planning proces
4. Turn in the form to the main office at least ONE MONTH prior to the event if not on the master calendar. Those items, such as dances, that are on the master calendar are due two weeks prior to the event. The office staff will forward the form to the Assistant Director for approval. Once the event is approved, the office staff will add the event to the master calendar, place a copy in the Special Event Notebook, forward a copy of the approved form to the Assistant Director, and return the original to the faculty sponsor.
5. Chaperones: the chaperone list must be completed and turned in to the Assistant Director before the event will be approved. . In addition to the faculty sponsor, you must have 2 male parent/guardian chaperones, 2 female parent/guardian chaperones, and 2 faculty chaperones = 7 chaperones unless otherwise noted..
6. Change boxes are available from the main office for all special events. If a change box is needed, check one out from the main office.
7. If change is needed for the event, you must notify the Office Manager in the Main Office at least two weeks in advance. He/she will withdraw the requested amount from the appropriate account. After the event, the money will be re-deposited into the account.
8. All money collected during the event must be turned over to the administrator in charge at the end of the event. The administrator will place the box in the school safe. Please see the account technician as soon as possible following the event to deposit the money in the appropriate account.
9. If you plan on using the school’s stereo or any other equipment, the organization must request permission from Student Council at least one month before the event (see Section 6.4, pg 28).
10. The sponsoring group is responsible for set-up and clean-up of the event.
11. The sponsoring group is encouraged to send thank-you notes to chaperones. Please coordinate this effort with the sponsor of the event.
12. Groups will not contact any donors until they have coordinated efforts with the Director of Development. The sponsoring group is also encouraged to send thank you notes to donors of door prizes, refreshments, or entertainment for the event.
Drama Productions — Uni High’s annual dramatic productions include a play (in the fall), one-act plays (occasionally in winter), a musical or play (in the spring), and Big Show (during or near X-Week). From time to time in recent years, original plays written and directed by Uni students have also been produced in the winter. Taking part in dramatics consumes a large amount of time, especially when the performance night nears. While it seems that “the show must go on,” students are still responsible for keeping their grades up and getting assignments in on time. Uni’s major productions have a director (the drama teacher), a student director, a stage manager, and various production crews, in addition to the cast. One-act plays and Big Show are student-produced. Most productions are held in Uni’s North Attic (the Attic Playhouse). Performances are open to students, parent(s)/guardian(s), and to the public.
Music — The music program at Uni includes both vocal and instrumental music. Vocal music includes mixed chorus and madrigals, and instrumental music includes orchestra and jazz band. The music program provides several performances throughout the school year. Each music group is open to all interested students, with the sole exception of madrigals, for which students must audition.

Please Note: The Urbana Code places a curfew on those under 17 years old from 11:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 12:00 midnight until 5:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday. The Champaign Code places a curfew on those under the age of 14 from 10:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. seven days a week. This code also places a curfew on those between the ages of 14 and 17 from 11:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 12:00 midnight until 5:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Uni students who live outside of Champaign-Urbana should be familiar with the curfew codes in their own communities. All restrictions are waived if a person is accompanied by a parent/guardian or a responsible adult over 18 years of age with the consent of the parent or guardian. Only three Uni social events have traditionally extended beyond 11:00 p.m.: the Winter Formal, the Spring Fling, and Prom end at 11:45 p.m. Uni High assumes that legal arrangements regarding curfew have been made by parents. |
