n Fire — In case of a fire or a fire drill:
• The fire alarm will sound. It sounds like a siren and will continue repeating until it is shut off.
• Students are to leave the building by the nearest stairway or door accompanied by their teacher (See fire evacuation diagrams in each room.). Do not take time to close doors, windows, or shut off lights.
• While leaving the building, students should move swiftly – not run.
• Students should not carry books from the building and should not return to their lockers for articles of clothing. The purpose is to conserve human life, not property.
• If there is a person in class who is unable to walk down the stairs alone, the teacher should request two adults to assist him/her out of the building.
• Do Not Use the Elevator!!!
• After leaving the building, teachers should swiftly move their classes down the sidewalk past Uni Gym. Students using the south exit should move swiftly down the sidewalk past the Hue House. If it is raining or excessively cold, teachers should move students to Uni Gym following these same routes. Students exiting from the south entrance should use the west entrance of Uni Gym. Once we have cleared the building, it will be locked. Roll will be taken when out of the building. Students should find their class and teacher.
• Faculty and students may return to their classroom when notified by one long bell.
n Tornado, Disaster And Civil Defense— The signal for tornado, disaster and civil defense alerts will be five short rings of the bell. Teachers are to assume responsibility for the following actions:
• All students from the third floor quietly move to the second floor corridor along the walls avoiding areas of glass and leaving a free passage down the center of the hall.
• All students from the fourth floor quietly move to the first floor corridor along the walls avoiding areas of glass and leaving a free passage down the center of the hall.
• All students from the second floor quietly move into the second floor corridors, again avoiding glass and leaving a free passage down the center of the hall.
• All students in the first floor quietly move into the first floor corridor, again avoiding glass and leaving a free passage down the center of the hall.
• It will be very crowded, but stay away from glass doors.
• All students in the gymnasium move into the locker rooms. Teachers take the portable phone and the portable weather radio with you. Uni High administration will keep in contact via the portable phone.
• Teachers in the building, but not teaching during the time of the alert, are asked to assist in the orderly movement of students and the maintenance of quiet so that further instructions can be easily given. The importance of quietness should be stressed.
• Instructions to students:
1. Assume a seated position on the floor facing lockers, with the head down and hands locked over the head during a disaster period. If you are wearing a heavy jacket or have access to other heavy cloth material, use these items to cover your body and head. This will help protect you from any flying glass or debris. Always try to stay close to the floor.
2. Leave a passageway through the center of each shelter area.
3. Keep away from outside walls, doors and windows. Closed blinds and drapes will help reduce the amount of flying glass.
In case of a Tornado Warning, we will follow these procedures for a period of 30 minutes. If the immediate danger continues to exist, the siren will be sounded again at the end of that 30-minute period, or any time after that 30-minute period that new, immediate danger develops. No all clear signal will be sounded. Following a lapse of 30 minutes from the last sounded warning signal, we will ring the passing bell and individuals may return to their classrooms. We will also monitor the progress of situation via a weather radio. The Assistant Director will decide when it is okay to return to classes.
During disaster and civil defense drills, faculty, staff, and students should follow the procedures listed. The passing bell will ring at the close of the drill to signal the return to classes and offices.
a. Code Red: Signal: 30 second buzzer. A serious incident is in progress and the situation is not under control. Examples would include a fight out of control, and intruder causing harm, someone in the building has a weapon and it has not been located, or a hostage situation.
If evacuation is ordered, take nothing. Exit the building as quickly as possible.
Students remaining in the halls after classrooms have been locked need to move to the closest secure location.
• 3 & 4th floor students not assigned to a class or in the hall at the time of the buzzer will move, if safe, to the PC Lab. A counselor/administrator or the teacher with the class using the Windows Lab or the lab monitor will secure this room from the inside until you are notified by the office staff or UIUC Police to release them to their next class or move to another location and hear the all clear signal. Teachers and lab monitors should be aware that students will be entering the PC lab.
• 2nd floor students not assigned to a class or in the hall at the time of the buzzer will move, if safe, to the Library. A staff member in the Library will secure this room from the inside until you are notified by the office staff or UIUC Police to release them to their next class or move to another location and hear the all clear signal.
• 1st floor students not assigned to a class or in the hall at the time of the buzzer will move, if safe, to the Student Lounge. A staff member will secure this room from the inside until you are notified by the office staff or UIUC Police to release them to their next class or move to another location and hear the all clear signal.
• If there is evidence of a shooting, students should turn desks on sides and get behind the desks. Stay away from doors and windows in the doors. Do not peer out the windows or doors at anytime.
If evacuation is ordered, take nothing. Exit the building as quickly as possible. Our evacuation sites are Uni Gym or Kenney Gym. Follow instructions from the campus police or Uni Administrators.
If a student in your room is injured, first aid kits along with emergency cards are located in the teacher’s desk.
• Kenney Gym:
Teachers will be informed of Category III—Code Red Emergency in person, by phone and/or by walkie-talkie.
All students should go to the nearest area that can be locked. Students should stay away from windows and doors. Once the door is locked no one should be admitted.
If the alarm sounds at lunch time please seek shelter in the classroom/office that is open and has a teacher in it to lock the room. Otherwise proceed to one of the secure locations.
Once a room is locked, no one may leave until the clear signal is given. Ignore all signals or knocks on the door and stay in the room The all clear signal is an administrator or counselor unlocking the door of each room. If police in uniform give instructions, follow the instructions.
• Gym occupants will move quickly to room 113 (visiting team locker room in the Kenney Gym Annex) and lock the doors.
• Weight room occupants will move to room 113 (visiting team locker room) if the weight room is deemed unsafe and lock the doors.
• Students in the classrooms will be locked in and stay away from windows and doors. Teachers should shut and lock (if safe to do) their doors and keep students in the room. Once the door is locked do not admit any students or adults.
• Locker room—students will be locked in and stay put. Students should stay away from windows and doors.
· Locker room 113 in Kenney Gym known as the Boy Athletes Locker Room—students in this locker room will move swiftly to the office (room 201) if it is safe to do so.
• Track
