Curriculum Study

• NSF-funded curriculum:  One section of first-, second-, and third-year math courses following COMAP's Mathematics: Modeling Our World.  The 2002-2003 school year marked the final year of a four-year study (two full three-year cycles, which began in the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 school years).  Goals for this course are:

• "Validate" an NCTM Standards-based curriculum designed to embody a "math for all" philosophy for students at the top of the performance spectrum--in other words, to determine whether a "math for all" course really can serve the needs of academically talented students.
• Expose Uni math faculty to new teaching methods and new mathematical content.
• Involve Uni High in the national discussion of mathematics curricula.

• Curriculum Refinement:  Not everything new is necessarily better than everything old.  During the 2003-2004 school year, we began using a second NSF-funded curriculum developed in the last decade, combined with materials originally developed by Prof. Robert Davis, who taught at Uni over 20 years ago.

• Parkland Regional Math Contest:  Uni High won first place overall (division 3AA), taking first place in all four subject tests (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Pre-Calculus), and taking first place in Fr-Soph 8-person team, Fr-Soph 2-person team, Jr-Sr 8-person team, and the Oral competition.  In addition, Diana Liu placed first on the individual Algebra 1 test, Ethan Berl, Joe Leigh, Jacob Olshansky, and Jennifer Roloff tied for first place in Algebra 2, and Alex Zhai placed first in Pre-Calculus.
• ICTM State Math Contest:  Uni placed 6th overall in division 3AA.
   
• Not really a math contest, but we're proud of Daniel Wilson (17th place) and Karen Woodley (honorable mention) for their performance on the first North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad.

• MathCounts:  Regional winners... team Ethan Berl, Jennifer Roloff, Jessica Stark, and Alex Zhai, with individual Michael Renner and alternate Frankie McFarland advanced to state.  The team placed 10th in the state, and Alex Zhai won first place in the state on the individual competition.  Alex represented the State of Illinois team at the national MathCounts competition in Washington, DC May 6-8, 2004, where his 5th place finish overall helped push the Illinois team to first place in the United States!!!
• Parkland/ICTM Regional Math Contest:  Uni High won first place overall (division 3AA), taking first place in Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, Calculator Team, F/S 8-person, F/S 2-person, and J/S 2-person.  In individual contests, Agatha Kim placed first in Algebra 2 and Elaine Wah placed first in Precalculus.
• ICTM State Math Contest:  Uni placed sixth overall in Division 3AA.  Annie Liang won third place in the individual Algebra 1 competition; our junior-senior eight person team won first place, our Algebra 1 team placed 5th, our Calculator Team placed 3rd, one of our freshman/sophomore relay teams placed 5th, and one of our junior/senior relay teams placed 7th.

• Parkland/ICTM Regional Math Contest:  Uni High won first place overall (division 3AA), taking first place in Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, F/S 8-person, J/S 8-person, F/S 2-person, and Orals (Laura Book and Ellen Martinsek).  Uni student placed first in each individual contest as well:  Alejandra Collopy in Algebra 1, Agatha Kim in Geometry, Sarah Ackley in Algebra 2, and David Kaplan in Precalculus.
• ICTM State Math Contest:  Uni High won 5th place overall in division 3AA.  Individuals earning awards included Alejandra Collopy, Agatha Kim, and David Kaplan; our Algebra 1 and Junior/Senior Relay Teams placed second, our Pre-Calculus and Calculator Teams placed third, Geometry and F/S 2-person Teams placed fourth, our oralists (Maria Boca, assisted by Laura Book) placed 6th.

• American Statistical Association's School Statistical Project Competition: 1st place in Grades 10-12 division was awarded to Nicola Bunick, Smita Ghosh, Alexandra Zodhiates, and Maria Zych for Blinded By the Suns:  Animation and the Learning Process.  They each received a TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator and a check for $50!!!
• MathCounts:  Regional winners... team consists of Carol Nakamura, Julie Chen, George Gu, and Robbie Robinson; individuals Emma Marshak, Colette DeJong, Tess Garvey, and Alejandra Collopy (Alejandra advances to state in the individual competition, and the team advances in team competition).
• Mandelbrot:  This year, our Division B team has earned PERFECT SCORES on the team test in rounds 2 and 3!
• Parkland/ICTM Regional Math Contest:  Uni High won first place overall (division 3AA), taking first place in Algebra 1, Geometry, Precalculus, F/S 8-person, J/S 8-person, and Orals.  Uni student placed first in each individual contest as well:  Agatha Kim in Algebra 1, Shang Jiang in Geometry, David Kaplan in Algebra 2, and Guy Bresler in Precalculus.
• ICTM State Math Contest:  Uni High won 3rd place overall in division 3AA.  Individuals earning awards included Agatha Kim, Shang Jiang, Catherine Wah, David Kaplan, and Yi Ding; our Geometry and J/S 8-person teams placed first; our oralists (Maria Boca, assisted by Guy Bresler), Algebra 2, F/S 8-person, and J/S Relay teams placed second.  Our J/S 2-person team placed 5th.

"Who is Max Beberman?"

Max Beberman, the creator of "New Math," was a teacher at University High School until his death in 1972.
