Mary Murphy Schroeder Class of 1958
The
Honorable Mary Murphy Schroeder is now Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit, by far
the largest circuit in the country, with a full complement of 28 judges. It
handles about 20 percent of all of the appeals in the federal court system. She
moved from the Arizona State Court of Appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals in
October 1979. Judge Schroeder
received her J.D. from the University of Chicago and has been a visiting
instructor at the Arizona State University Law school, where she received that
law schoolÕs distinguished achievement award. She is an adjunct lecturer at
Duke University. Judge Schroeder is active in several associations, including
the National Association of Women Judges (president, 1998-9), the American
Judicature Society and the National Association of Women Lawyers. Judge
Schroeder also has been a member of the ABA Standing Committee on Federal
Judicial Improvements.
