Sophomores Alex Zhai and Ethan Berl were the Uni winners for the American Mathematics Contest 12 and American Mathematics Contest 10, respectively.

In all, 32 Uni students qualified to participate in the prestigious American Invitational Mathematics Examination due to their high scores on the AMC 12 or AMC 10. Students took the AMC exams during school hours on Jan. 31.

In an e-mail, executive math teacher Craig Russell described the 32 qualifiers as “the largest number in my eight years at Uni, by a FACTOR OF TWO!!!”

Russell also noted that Elizabeth Jockusch, who will retire at the end of the school year, has taught 28 or the 32 students for two or more years. (For an appreciation of Jockusch as a teacher, see David Boyle's Feb. 9 column.)

The AMC 10, AMC 12, and AIME are sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America.

The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice exams containing problems that can be solved with precalculus concepts.

The AIME is a 15-question, three-hour exam from which the top scorers are invited to participate in the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad. Last year Alex Zhai qualified for the USAMO.

The 32 students listed below qualified to take the AIME by achieving an AMC 12 score of 100 or an AMC 10 score of 120.
