The Uni High Yearbook and the Gargoyle student newspaper received major awards Monday from the Southern Illinois School Press Association.
The 2005 Yearbook, co-edited by Dawn Spelke, Lauren Wingo, Robert Ratcliffe, and Andy Renner, was named a SISPA Golden Dozen winner, the highest award for overall yearbook excellence given by the organization.
Yearbooks are judged on the basis of their theme development, coverage, writing, photography, design, graphics, typography, and reader service.
Earlier this year, the 2005 Yearbook also won several awards from the Eastern Illinois High School Press Association. In the EIHSPA's small-school category, the book won second place for graphics, third place for use of photography, third place for best dividers, and third place for best layout and design.

The 2005-06 Gargoyle, meanwhile, received SISPA's 2006 Blue Banner award, the organization's highest honor for overall newspaper excellence. The paper was evaluated for its coverage and content, writing and editing, photos, art, and graphics, and layout and design.
Earlier this year, the 2004-05 Gargoyle received an All-American rating with five marks of distinction (the highest rating possible) from the National Scholastic Press Association, based at the University of Minnesota.
The paper, co-edited by Chris Breault, Nathaniel Gottlieb-Graham, Agatha Kim, Hillary Proctor, and Mark Yates-White, earned 3,955 points out of a possible 4,000. The marks of distinction were for coverage and content, writing and editing, photos, art, and graphics, layout and design, and leadership.
