Girls soccer: Uni punchless in 7-0 loss to Mahomet-Seymour

Posted Wednesday, April 26, 2006, The OG, sports

The girls soccer team's two-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday as Mahomet-Seymour dominated the Illineks 7-0. Uni's varsity record fell to 3-10.

Despite 12 saves by junior goalie Mandy Grill, the Bulldogs went into halftime ahead 4-0. Uni by contrast was unable to launch a single shot on goal.

In the second half the visitors added three goals, while Grill made seven more saves. Uni managed four shots on goal.

The Illineks' lack of offense was due in part to the absence of sophomore Suran Yoo, who missed the game due to a knee injury she suffered Friday against Monticello. It's not known how long she will be out of the lineup. Yoo leads the Illineks with six goals.

“The game wasn't too much of a shock, scorewise,” said senior co-captain Roveiza Irfan, who is out of action herself due to a knee injury. “We were playing a lot better defensively, but Mahomet is both skilled and fast, so their pace was hard to keep up with. The lack of Suran's speed on the offensive end limited our shots today, which was unfortunate.”

Even with the lopsided score, there were a few highlights in the Illineks' performance.

“[Junior] Amelia Breault played incredibly well defensively and trapped and cleared a lot of balls out of the box,” Irfan said. “If she hadn't been positioned so well, Mahomet would've gotten even more shots off.”

The girls visit Mattoon on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. varsity match. Visit the team's home page for a complete schedule of 2006 games.

In other soccer news, the IHSA has announced the schedule for the Class A sectionals. The girls will compete in the Decatur St. Teresa bracket, where they will face Decatur Lutheran on May 16 at 4 p.m.

If the Illineks win that game, two days later they would face the winner of the May 15 Judah Christian-Decatur St. Teresa match.
