Girls soccer: Uni shut out again

Posted Friday, April 14, 2006, The OG, sports

The Uni girls varsity soccer team was shut out Thursday for the seventh time this season as Macon Meridian defeated the visiting Illineks 8-0.

Meridian scored four goals in each half, including a penalty kick in the first half. Illinek goaltender Mandy Grill made 15 saves, despite playing on a strained foot.

The loss drops the team's record to 1-7.

Uni, which played without several important starters, dominated the game for the first 10 minutes.

“But once Meridian scored one goal, morale was down and we couldn't recover,” senior co-captain Roveiza Irfan said.

The Illineks had four shots on goal in the first half, three of which came in the opening 10 minutes. The team added three shots on goal in the second half, including a breakaway by senior Lucy Schiller near the end of the game.

Next up: The girls visit Normal Calvary Baptist on Saturday for an 11 a.m. matchup. NCB defeated Uni 3-0 on March 28. Visit the team's home page for a complete schedule of 2006 games.
