Meet the candidates: Class of 2007
Posted Monday, May 22, 2006, The OG, news
The current subfreshmen through juniors will elect their 2006-07 officers on Tuesday during English classes. Below are the Class of 2007 candidates for president, vice president, secretary/treasurer, and SFAC representative. Student Council gave us permission to post their bios, which candidates were required to submit. We are publishing the bios without making any editing changes for grammar, punctuation, style, etc. Candidates are presented in alphabetical order.
President
BEN HYMAN
Alright, so here's the deal. I'm running for president of our (senior!) class for Studco purely because I've never done it before, either in my old school or here. I feel that I bring a completely new persepctive, both to Uni and student politics in general. Basically, I hope to make senior year easy enough for the rest of you in terms of class representation, but I also want to make sure you're all involved. This means, for example, more movie nights with candy (caaaaandy!), better dance organization, and what you want, when you want it. In other words, you'll know when the barbeque will happen. I'd work closely with the vice president and the rest of the class to ensure unification. Plus more candy, always an important point. Though I don't yet know who my enem — opponents are, so I
can't disperse counter-propaganda, I hope that my imposing physical stature and friendly platform will encourage people to vote for me.
Thanks!
DEVIN JOHNSON
Hello, my name is Devin Johnson. You might remember from such movies as “How To Dance” and “History Channel Cribs”. I'm running for President to carry on the tradition of actors getting involved in politics and to help improve our class. I'm a very effecient, creative, and productive worker when it comes to big out of school events, as can be seen in the movie nights I've organized as President of IFMU club and as a dedicated member of the Big Show cast this year. I will try to arrange events for class bonding that will try to bond the entire class, instead of just groups of friends that are pretty bonded already. I will also make these events fun and cool for 16-18 year old Seniors, such as by not watching strictly PG movies. “Cool Runnings” is fine and dandy for a 1st grade class activity, but we're about to graduate High School, I think we can handle some more mature movies. Anyways, I will work hard to organize these events and make our class totally sweet.
SAM KLEIN
Why do I want to be El Presidente? I believe that most people want to have a good time during their last year at UNI. Each and every one of you want and deserve to have a ridiculously fun senior trip and I will provide. Some will want class events and I will provide. Some will want class projects to help our community and I will provide. I will take the steps necessary to make sure everyone has a good time. Optimism is my philosophy. Sacre L'sable!!! We will have a sweet senior year!!! My name is Sam Klein. Vote for me and wee, yes, ci, cain (Hebrew) the future looks good.
KRISTA OLSON
My name is Krista Olson, and I would be honored to be your senior class president next year. If elected, I would strive to facilitate more interaction between members of the class and class representatives. I would try to obtain more input from people in the senior class, so activities like the Senior Auction during X-Week, service projects and other activities would be successful and beneficial for all. I've served as a class representative to student council for the past three years as secretary treasurer, then president, but I don't think that's enough to make a great senior class president. I'm an organized, hard-worker and enjoy collaborating with people. But that's still not enough!! Next year,
if elected, I want more involvement from you to make a more effective, beneficial student council. Please vote for me for senior class president.
BEN SCHAAP
I am running for Senior class President. I believe that I would be the best candidate for the job because I am organized and responsible. I will do my best to help us seniors in our last year together. In our
last year, we should have a good strong president, one with whom we can have a good time with on casual occasions and more formally planed events such as the senior trip. You should vote for me because I will be a good president and one who can make our senior year just that much more fun
Vice President
DANA AL-QADI
On a sunny day in September, I walked into the Studco. Room on a whim and gave a 30 second “schpeel” about why I wanted to be Parliamentarian. I can't vividly remember exactly what I said but the point is, I walked out of that door with the fancy brown gavel (because Studco. Parliamentarians
get fancy brown gavels, you know). I would like to take my involvement with Student Council a step further by running for Vice President of the senior class. We can kick it up a notch for next year and leave with a bang.
ALEX CAHILL
Hey fellow students
I hope you all have enjoyed the second to last year that you will ever spend in high school. Now we are off to a senior year where everything will be new. What do you say we have some new student council leaders and give them a chance? I'm not sure how one can really express how they would be a good candidate in a small essay of few words. You should all just base your vote off how these candidates have acted in the last years. If you think that I would make a good officer than you already know why, right?
Otherwise vote for whoever you think will be good. You could give the benefit of the doubt to me though, since I “informed” you of how this should be. Thanks all.
NICOLE GONG
Hi everyone!
As you all know, I'm running for vice president of our class and with senior year approaching, I think there are a lot of things that we ought to be thinking about — what we want to do for our senior class trip, how we want to plan the annual Six Flags trip, and such. Though these don't seem to be pressing matters at the moment, I'm sure that once Senior year starts everyone will be busy with college applications, and school work, and I think that the senior class trips will be a lot more fun if we all
talk about them and know what's happening. Though I cannot claim to have an extensive relationship with Student Council, I can say that if I am elected to represent our class I will strive to get everyone involved. Student government is really about change and honestly I want to represent our class and make change.
(Thanks for reading this and I'd appreciate your vote!)
DAISY HASSANI
Hi guys,
You all know me by now, and hopefully you know that I've been a responsible and diligent vice-president for the past three years. I've helped to lead you guys through oh so many memorable events. Think back to the reindeer ranch and winter formal sophomore year. Were those some of
the best times of your life, or what? And don't forget prom this year. That was quite an undertaking, but your friendly neighborhood stud co pulled through. Want to have more great times as a class? Of course you do. Vote for me. I have the experience and the leadership to get you where you want to be as a class. Senior year is going to be great. But you can make it even better by voting for me for vice president!.
Thanks, and much love.
Secretary/Treasurer
ROHUN PALEKAR
Dear Class of 2007,
While succeeding a well-qualified man such as my esteemed colleague, Martin Granick, may be a tough job, I feel that I can fill in his shoes and continue the smooth operation he has run for the past two years. I have previously held the highly regarded and crucial position of lounge representative and feel I can handle the responsibilities of the secretary/treasurer. I assure you that you can count on me much as you could count on Michael Jordan making that clutch shot in overtime. Bob Dylan once said, “There is nothing so stable as change.”
So in this year's class election, I hope you make the right choice and select me as your Senior Secretary/Treasurer.
Student-Faculty Advisory Committee (SFAC) Representative
MICHAEL BELMONT
Hey, seniors-to-be. We all know each other pretty well by now, so I'm not nervous writing this like I was when I wrote my first bio not so long ago. I've been representing you all in SFAC for two years now, serving as its secretary last year, and its vice president this year. In doing so, I've gathered the experience I'll need to act as the SFAC president next year. Please show the same faith in me you've shown in the past, and re-elect me to SFAC. Really, the only other person in the class who has any idea what it's all about is Jonathon Baron, and I don't think he's running, and even if he is, I know more. Thank you.
ELIZABETH FORD
Hey everyone,
I've decided to run for SFAC this year because I feel I could make it run more quickly and effectively. SFAC spent almost all of this year working on the honor code, which I think was an unnecessary amount of time. The honor code is important, but it should have been completed sooner. The Online Gargoyle says that “SFAC should spend 2006-07 working on plans for an honor council, a process which might take two or three years to complete.” I don't see any reason why it has to take that long if SFAC is dedicated to getting it done. If I were our class's SFAC rep, I would put a lot of time into developing this council during 2006-2007 so SFAC will be able to focus its energy on new issues in 2007-2008.
As the senior SFAC rep, I would help develop a fair and effective honor council system. This honor council may not affect us much, but even though it's not going to be too long until I graduate, I still feel that our school deserves a fair system. With an honor council, students AND the administration will have a say in disciplinary issues, which I think would really be valuable.
Anyway, vote for me!
