CD review: The Capote Flat (featuring Uni's Eddie Diazmuñoz), "Dream!"

THE CAPOTE FLAT
"Dream!"
Released: August 2008
Genre: Alternative Pop

Update: The Capote Flat, a band featuring junior Eddie Diazmuñoz on drums, was scheduled to perform at the third annual Uni High Cultural Fair on Oct. 3 but had to cancel because other members, from out of state, will not be able to attend. For more about Eddie and his band, look for an OG story by Sindha Agha coming soon.

IN AUGUST, UNI'S very own Eddie Diazmuñoz released an album with his three-man band, The Capote Flat.

I am a huge fan of alternative pop/rock, and I especially love supporting indie artists. “Dream!,” The Capote Flat’s first album, is a terrific listen!

The band features Eddie, a junior, on drums/percussion, Jordan Griener on bass, and Zac Craven on vocals, guitar, and piano.

Every song on this interesting mix of alternative pop/rock music is different and original. The CD begins with “Conjunction Function Introduction,” which has no lyrics — just soulful guitar.

Eddie picks up the pace on drums in the next song, “Conquistador.” “We Sleep with the Lights On” continues to showcase Eddie’s skills. The lyrics say, “We think too much about the simple stuff we want to do, but we don’t act on it,” but with Eddie’s percussion this band acts on it.

The song “Dear Apology” starts with: “Baby I’m sorry, I have the worst case of the Mondays. My mindsets blowing up, and my crooked head just won’t stay straight. Baby wait up I didn’t mean what I said on Sunday.” The song is about an apology in the most basic meaning of the notion, an explanation that “love is not defined by words.”

The Capote Flat, "Dance"

“Dance” is a great song with a beautiful melody, and is unlike anything I have heard before, mixing piano with percussion and an upbeat tune.

In contrast to its name and sound, the song is not danceable and the lyrics tell a story you might not expect — “Smiles are just like costumes, and every day’s a masquerade, so take these words for what they’re worth …”

The dance is a metaphor for a relationship that ended, and it reminds us that we can choose to remember the good parts.

Fans of Backseat Goodbye's “Nightmares are Dreamers” album will especially like “Dream!”

Any Backseat Goodbye devotee will love The Capote Flat’s “1990’s” or “T.G.I.F.” They both have a similar mix of pop piano tunes with light guitar rock.

With intricate lyrics full of meaning and soul, The Capote Flat will prove an even better listen. They have a more upbeat rock feel as opposed to the mellower Backseat Goodbye.

The song “10 Goals by the End of July” has easy-to-relate-to lyrics such as “1. Stop letting people walk all over you.”

The lyrics have a poetic flow, but they also make sense to any teen. We Uni people are a goal-oriented bunch, but making a list and setting a deadline never sounded so good.

All in all, a great CD.

“Dream!” is The Capote Flat’s first album. It is available for sale through Eddie Diazmuñoz.

Hmm

Not sure what to think.

this cd is decent. i dont

this cd is decent. i dont see why you gave it such a great review, but it could be much worse. props to eddie for taking the initiative to get serious with his music.

Good review.

I think she was write to give this material a good review. It has much more meaning to all of us as teenagers than most of the music on the radio, or even the typical indie band pretending to be from the civil war era singing about their yankee bayonets. It's a great cd and i like his voice alot.

Zac, really?

Is that seriously Zac on the vocals?? He sounds so shrill here, compared to how I know him... Where did The Capote Flat record this/who produced it?

But congratulations to Eddie et al. on the CD release, anyway.
