Today during school I attended the senior auction like most Uni students. I wholeheartedly support the event, but it is still beyond me how people spend so much money on things.
To me, the most ridiculous purchase made was $78 for a hug for the senior class. I believe that was the most ridiculous of the day. Since the hug lasted about 30 seconds, I calculate this to be 2.6 dollars per second. Wow.
While I don't know what those who bought the hug were thinking, I can only hope that they were thinking about the massive amount of money they had just given to charity, and not just a hug.
The spending levels of Uni students vary drastically from student to student. Some students are the ultimate penny pinchers and refuse to give out the extra 25 cents needed. Others are like walking ATMs and will loan money at a moment's notice.
The frenzied bidding taking place at the senior auction must have not only given the charity Books to Prisoners a large sum of money, but also considerably drained the wallets of Uni students.
I am also surprised at the success of the auction compared to other X-Week events. From what I have heard and seen, no other events had the massive turnout of the senior auction, and none can hope to try and bring in the money that the auction does. I would recommend more auction- type events for the other classes. Maybe then Uni students would feel the incentive to give to charity more.

The Hug
I was one of those who bought the hug, and it was split between four people. We were indeed thinking of the charity. It was a great way for me, personally, to push myself to donate, because if I didn't absolutely owe someone the money, I know that I might forget to donate.
I agree that the Senior Auction seems to be one of the great money-bringing event, but don't forget about Big Show! The money from Big Show will also go to Books to Prisoners.
