Election 2008

Column: From indifference to commitment, a political convert looks back at Election ’08

Before the 2008 presidential race, Jason He had little interest in politics and even less familiarity with the candidates. But as the campaign progressed, so did Jason's fascination with the latest election news. How did a once-apathetlc high schooler become a political junkie?

Say NO to Prop 8!

I am angry.

Actually, outraged may be the most appropriate word.

Election Night 2008: On pins and needles

To start with, a little about me
I'm probably most readily classified as a socialist or communist. I don't really know the difference. But in an idyllic world, everything would be shared and free and jobs would be on a rotating basis, free health care, no wars, no weapons, no class system at all. Not evil communism. Happy love communism.

Election Night 2008: The final hours

Preface
We are literally hours away from the conclusion of one of the most important events in our lifetime: the 2008 presidential election. Tens of millions of Americans will have voted for the new leader of the free world. History will be made with either the first African American president or the first female vice president. Both are major steps in our country's history.

If the world could vote

Anticipation and apprehension only seem to swell, hardly fade, in these final few hours, and we acknowledge, we celebrate, we know — Election Day is upon us.

Obama wins mock election in a landslide

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Obama won big in the Gargoyle's schoolwide mock election survey. But 34 students (12 percent) voted for McCain — a number more than many have expected. Plus, a respectable 42 percent of those surveyed said they trusted McCain more on the issue of national security. Still, Obama led McCain on every question on our survey, reflecting the high enthusiasm and support that he has garnered here at Uni High.

Two weeks of torture

I’d like to start out by saying that I normally like to at least try and follow politics and current events, as part of being a semi-informed citizen and all of that. But with two weeks left before everyone (by which I mean 35 percent of non-felon citizens over age 18 or whatever) goes off to vote, I’ve reached my limit, I have to say:

I want this election to be over.

Gargoyle to conduct schoolwide presidential mock election, opinion poll

We've seen the national polls, but what do Uni students think of the 2008 presidential election? In what areas do we favor Barack Obama, and in what ways do we give the edge to John McCain? The Gargoyle seeks to find out this week in a survey designed by editors Isaac Chambers, Laura Dripps, Will Fernandez, and Jason He.

Third presidential debate: All it took was five minutes

Due to the fact that the debates can't seem to last very long on the TVs in our house, and the other fact that I was far too lazy to move to a room with a TV in it, I decided to watch the debate tonight online. That way, I could watch while filling out music surveys on Facebook (read: doing my homework).

Third presidential debate: Did McCain kick Obama's "you-know-what?"

In the third and final debate between presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama, McCain needed something big. All the major networks talked about how he would have to be at his best to make sure that his campaign would be able to rebound after a hellish last few weeks. He came out and looked Obama straight in the eye and thus began the debate.

Blogging the final presidential debate

Katy Metcalf and other OG staff members are already blogging about the third and final presidential debate. Follow their reactions and contribute your own by visiting the OG Staff Blog. Can John McCain stage a comeback? Or is this the night when Barack Obama seals the deal? And what about Joe the Plumber? How does he and Joe Sixpack and hockey moms across America fit into all of this?

Third presidential debate: Same old song and dance

8:05 p.m. — Hey, we're already back to the same old song and dance … the economy! I feel like it should spelled with capital letters. The Economy. That sounds better.

I'm thinking I should write more. But I'm also thinking that I've got nothing else to say.

I guess I could do what the candidates do — repeat the same things over again.

News analysis: Dear John McCain, yes you can!

The reports of John McCain's political demise in the 2008 presidential election have been greatly exaggerated. With three weeks to go, there's plenty of time for the Republican candidate to make a comeback. OG editor Jason He offers some suggestions for how McCain can reclaim the lead he had just a month ago.

Dear John McCain, don't give up

First of all, I'd like to praise Isaac for his insightful analysis of the state of the election. He made several excellent points, and I won't argue with the idea that an Obama victory seems more and more certain with each passing day.

News analysis: Big numbers likely for Obama come Election Day

Prior to this final stage of the presidential election, whoever was ahead in the polls wasn't necessarily a good indicator of who was likely to win. But as we get into the home stretch, poll numbers should steady out and be a better indicator of what's going to happen come Nov. 4. One change that is apparent: the huge tide of support for Barack Obama going into the campaign's final weeks.
