    In the seniors' final regular-season varsity home game of their Uni careers, the Illineks defeated crosstown rival St. Thomas More 2-1 Thursday in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicated. The victory represented sweet revenge for last year's 7-0 pounding by the Sabers. The No. 2-seeded Illineks begin the Class 1A playoffs Tuesday against Oakwood. Check inside for the details.

  • Girls volleyball: Illineks use 17 service aces to dispatch Decatur Christian

    The 2008 edition of the Illineks moved closer to tying the school record for volleyball wins with an impressive victory over conference opponent Decatur Christian on Tuesday. Uni raised its record to 18-7 and was named one of The News-Gazette's teams of the week. The school record for wins is 20 set by last year's squad. This year's team has four regular-season matches left.

    Following a 5-0 loss to Urbana on Saturday, the Uni boys turned around and recorded their own 5-0 victory over Tolono Unity on Tuesday, led by junior Dan Lilly's two goals. Lilly now has 24 goals for the season. The varsity record has improved to 9-6-1, 3-0 in the ECIC.

  • Boys soccer: Uni falls to Urbana 5-0, continues losing streak against crosstown foe

    In 23 years of Uni boys soccer, the Illineks have faced the Urbana Tigers 20 times. After Uni’s 5-0 nonconference home loss to Urbana Saturday morning, they now have 20 losses. The outcome continued Uni's peculiar trend for blowouts this season, as four of Uni's last five games have been decided by at least five goals. Two were Uni wins (7-0 over Decatur Lutheran and 9-0 at Iroquois West) and two were losses (7-0 at Champaign Central and 5-0 to Urbana).

  • Girls swimming: Uni falls to Danville as Boyce sets three pool records

    Junior Lisa Boyce continued her record-setting pace, establishing new pool marks Saturday at Danville in the 200 free, 100 butterfly, and 100 free (set during the 400 free relay). Boyce, Milee Nelson, Erika Belmont, and Sian Best won the 200 and 400 relays. The Killer Whales return to action this Saturday at the Champaign Central Invitational.

Cross country: Boys tie for first at Spartan Classic but lose tiebreaker, girls finish eighth

The boys continue to improve as the season wears on, tying for first at the St. Joseph Spartan Classic with Bureau Valley, but losing the tiebreaker determined by the sixth runner. The girls also had a successful day running their unusual 1.97 mile course, finishing eighth overall.

Cross country: Boys win another meet, girls finish second at Monticello

After an impressive victory by the boys on Saturday at the Tuscola Classic, both cross country teams were back in action Tuesday at a meet hosted by Monticello. The girls placed second overall, led by top 10 finishes by Elizabeth Russell, Elaine Gu, and Maddy Levin, while the boys won even without their No. 2 runner, Nathan Smith.

Cross country: Boys win Tuscola Classic in convincing fashion, girls place eighth

Malcolm Taylor and Nathan Smith led the Uni boys to a decisive victory at the Tuscola Classic on Saturday. Among the the teams they beat was Shelbyville, which entered the meet ranked No. 7 in Class 1A while Uni was No. 9. The girls team, led by junior Elizabeth Russell, placed eighth amid substantial improvement from several runners.

Although the Uni girls placed third in Tuesday's tri meet with Danville and Centennial, they continued to show major improvement, recording 10 personal bests. Junior Lisa Boyce again won two individual events and set another pool record. Fellow newcomer Milee Nelson also won an event.

The Uni Killer Whales continue to improve on last season's performance, finishing just 20 points behind powerhouse O'Fallon and 73 points ahead of third-place Charleston in Uni's first home meet in three years. Junior Lisa Boyce, recent News-Gazette athlete of the week, led the way with first-place finishes in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle.

Boys basketball wrap-up: Renner ends career with selection to News-Gazette All-Area First Team

Mike Renner, Uni High's career-scoring leader in boys basketball, recently received one last accolade: He was selected to The News-Gazette All-Area First Team, one of only 10 players to receive the honor. He joins his older brother Al Renner, a 2006 Uni alum, as a News-Gazette first-teamer. Mike also received all-state recognition from the Associated Press and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. Read on for more about Mike and several of his senior teammates.

Basketball awards: Yoo, Renner, Williams win varsity MVP honors

In the annual basketball awards ceremony held Monday at Uni Gym, seniors Aran Yoo, Mike Renner, and Chumar Williams came away with varsity MVP awards. Other honors included all-conference selections for Renner (unanimous), Williams, Yoo, and junior Rachel Skoza.

Basketball update: Williams advances in 3-point contest, Sullivan's run ends at state prelims

Senior Chumar Williams has made it past the second round of the IHSA Class 2A Three-Point Showdown. He is hoping to duplicate on the boys side the accomplishment of junior Jessi Sullivan, who advanced to the girls Class 2A state prelims this year. Her run ended Thursday, when she made five treys at Illinois State University's Redbird Arena.

Boys track: State runner-up! Taylor places second in Class A 400-meter dash

[AUDIO included] Junior Malcolm Taylor became the first Uni male track athlete in 67 years to win a runner-up medal at the IHSA state track meet as he ran the 400-meter dash in 49.74 seconds to finish behind only Ben Asmus of Heyworth. Taylor and Asmus are now 1-1-1 in competitions and look to continue their rivalry next year.

No, Deborah Ladd doesn't like to run all that much, so why is she writing a column in praise of running, and sports in general? "Sometimes I wonder why I do three sports a year," she writes, "but every time I improve myself or see a look of pride on my coach's face, I remember."

Girls track: Welch medals at state finals

Dartmouth-bound senior becomes first Uni girl to win state track medal in 13 years

Senior Ruthie Welch set a personal record in the 800-meter today to finish ninth at the IHSA Class A state finals and bring home a medal. The Dartmouth-bound senior became the first Uni girl to win a state track medal in any event since 1995.

Subfreshman sports: Boys basketball team ready to play for regional championship

The subfreshman boys will face second-seeded Champaign St. Matthew on Thursday night in the Class 8-2A Regional 4 title game. Uni has already won two regional games, including an 11-point upset of No. 1 seed Chrisman Scottland. The championship game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Subfreshman sports: Girls basketball team makes school history

Led by top scorer Jamie Blue, the Uni girls defeated Judah Christian 27-20 Monday in the opening round of the eighth-grade regional playoffs — the first time a subbie girls basketball team won a regional game. On Tuesday the girls almost outdid themselves, nearly pulling off a huge comeback win against top-seeded St. Matthew.

Subfreshman sports: T-boro defeats Uni girls in overtime

Jamie Blue scored 20 points but the subfreshman girls basketball team fell to Thomasboro 38-35 in overtime Thursday. With the loss, the girls are 4-4 on the season.

Girls volleyball: Illineks win Buckley tournament, Wong named MVP, Skoza breaks school records

Uni won the Buckley Christ Lutheran Tournament on Saturday, going 5-0. Michelle Wong earned tourney MVP honors, while Rachel Skoza was named to the all-tournament team. Skoza also broke Uni's career and season records for kills. With 17 wins, the team is just three short of tying the school record set last year.

Girls volleyball: Machesky sets school career record for digs as Illineks struggle but win

Thursday night the girls traveled more than an hour to Buckley where they thought they would grab an easy win, but it turned out to be a drawn-out struggle. Taking three games to finish the match, Uni squeezed through with a conference victory highlighted by senior Annie Machesky's record-setting performance in career digs.

For the second straight year, Jessi Sullivan has made it to the state prelims as one of the top shooters in the IHSA Three-Point Showdown. Sullivan, a junior, finished in the top four of Thursday's competition at Bloomington Central Catholic. Eight players competed in the showdown; only the top four would advance to next week's state prelims.

Mehnert, Welch, Rundus named Athletes of the Year

Track and girls soccer athletes were honored at Tuesday's sports awards ceremony at Uni Gym along with senior athletes, scholar athletes, and athletes of the year Michelle Mehnert, Ruth Welch, and Austin Rundus. Check inside for more of the honors that Uni athletes received.

Girls soccer: Season ends with 3-0 loss to Williamsville

[UPDATED with photos] Playing through a constant downpour, No. 1 seed Williamsville shut out Uni 3-0 in a sectional semifinal game this afternoon. The No. 4 seed Illineks ended their season 11-6-2, a major improvement over last season's 7-8-2 mark, which in turn was dramatically better than their 2006 record of 4-15.

Pack the place! StudCo aims to increase student attendance at sporting events

There should be a lot more people at Uni games this year, as Student Council is working on a plan to increase student support at athletic events. Among the plans are a T-shirt that would get people into games for free and a punch-card and raffle system. Check inside for the details.
