GILMAN — Following a hard-fought tie against Warrensburg-Latham on Monday, the Uni boys breezed by Iroquois West with a 9-0 nonconference victory Thursday.

Led by junior Dan Lilly’s four goals in the shortened game, the varsity improved its record to 8-5-1 overall, while remaining 3-0 in the East Central Illinois Conference.

Uni set the tone early with junior Eric Fritzsche scoring the first goal in the first minute from an assist by Lilly.

Lilly would then record an unassisted goal of his own in the third minute by picking up a bad clearance from the opposing defense and beating three defenders to score.

His second goal would come in the 11th minute, assisted by a well-placed pass from Fritzsche, allowing Lilly to get behind the defensive line in a one-on-one situation with the opposing keeper.

Fritzsche and Lilly would each score one more time before the end of the first half. Junior Neil Pearson assisted with a through pass on Fritzsche’s goal in the 17th minute. In the 30th minute, Lilly headed in a cross from fellow junior Eddie Diazmunoz.

Lilly would open the second half with his fourth and final goal in the 46th minute, assisted by senior Russell Prochaska. Lilly now has 22 goals for the season.

Two minutes later, senior Carl Pearson would score his first goal of the season with a shot from the right set up by a through pass from fellow senior Holden Bucher.

In the 59th minute, the offensive duo of Lilly and Fritzsche struck again as Fritzsche scored his third goal of the game, ninth of the season, by guiding in another deflected shot from Lilly.

Sophomore Chris Mathy would score the final goal of the game in the 62nd minute assisted by a through pass from senior Clement Dossin. The game, shortened by 16 minutes, ended two minutes later.

Uni outshot the host team 31 to six. Junior Nile Hamer and freshman Chris Nguyen combined for eight saves.

The postseason Class 1A seedings have also been released. Uni is seeded second in the Danville Schlarman regional. The No. 1 seed, Danville Schlarman, defeated Uni 1-0 earlier in the season.

The Illineks will open the playoffs on Oct. 14 against No. 7 Oakwood. Uni will host the 4 p.m. game at the U of I Intramural Fields, Stadium and First, Champaign.
