Cats? Pets? Why?

What is the point of having cats around? I think that is a legitimate question considering the fact that they don’t do anything AT ALL. I can understand when people have dogs as pets because they can actually do things. For instance, you can play fetch or you can take walks with a dog. Cats, on the other hand, are just plain useless.

Cats literally just sit around all day. Honestly, they eat, sleep, and sit on the sofa all day. You can’t play fetch. You can’t teach it tricks. You can’t make a cat do anything at all. Cats are really just blobs of fur.

Anyways, enough about cats, let’s talk about pets in general. What do they add to your life? I think they don’t add anything except an extra burden. You can’t have a conversation with them. Most of the time they are oblivious to their environment until they need food or a walk.

In conclusion, I think pets, and especially cats, are plain impractical. They can’t really do anything useful; maybe I would like them if they learned how to take out the trash or get the mail. But since they don’t, I don’t think I would miss them if they were gone.

I happen to LOVE cats.

Because we were young and ignorant, my sister and I loved our old cat, but my dad christened our pet Stupidus domesticus, or just “Stupid” for short, and I know he was right.

Like: our cat didn’t believe in litter boxes, so we’d have to let her outside several times a day. One night a wicked hurricane hit Long Island. Stupid hung out by the back door, but when we opened it, she saw how wet and windy it was, and insisted on trying the front door, like it was gonna be warm and sunny 20 feet to the north. The only way to get her out was to grab her, but she wouldn’t let us pick her up because she didn’t want to get wet. So to keep her from scratching us, we had to throw an old blanket over her, wrap her up in it, and just chuck the whole bundle outside.

They do land on their feet! Lots of times, anyway.

When we let her back in she was one mighty pissed-off cat, and refused to be nice to us, until she got hungry two hours later.

Sorry to disagree with you Ranny, but cats are great to have around. My youngest (of three), a 3-year-old siamese (Miko) is the best companion I could ever hope for outside of another human. Whenever I’m feeling down, I just throw on a CD by The Cure or Nine Inch Nails and sit down somewhere in my room, and he shows up and keeps me company. Cats are extremely dedicated and emotional animals who are quite caable of reading their owners’ emotions and reacting accordingly.

And while they may not be smart all of the time and can get in the way (I’ve fallen down the stairs at least once after tripping over my cats), they are great friends to have for comfort and enjoyment.

actually, studies have shown that people with pets are much less stressful than people without them. so they are kind of useful. but i do agree that cats are not nearly as useful as other pets.

I really enjoyed that anecdote, Ray.

btw, Ranny, i agree with you, my cat is indeed useless and quite rude.

Yeah…I agree with Carl here. Cats are actually quite intelligent and affectionate animals. For example, in the morning my cat comes into my room and sits on me until I open the shades so he can look outside, and then he starts purring and being really nice…and he does a much better job waking me up than my alarm clock.
Cats are enjoyed as pets by so many because they are low maintenance, and if treated well can become very valuable and loving companions. Even if they can’t take out the trash or get the mail.
