Accessing Online Library Resources From Home

The Uni High Library offers a wide range of resources that students, staff, and faculty are able to use online from home. This brief guide provides basic instructions, with links to more extensive help sources. For further information, please call us at 333-1589 or e-mail Ms. Harris.

You must be affiliated with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (which all currently enrolled Uni students are) in order to access most of the online resources that we link to.

If you do not have internet access at home and would like to, the University of Illinois supports free dialup access for its faculty, staff, and students (including Uni students). Click here for more information.

Step One - Network Authentication

Many of the Library's databases require users to enter a network ID (or NetID) and password when searching from off campus. NetIDs and passwords are assigned by the University of Illinois, and all new Uni students, staff, and /faculty should have received them when they started at the school. Password changes can be handled on the CITES Password home page. If you have forgotten your password, it must be changed in person at 1420 Digital Computing Lab (just across Mathews Street from Uni, fortunately).

Step Two - Start from the Uni Library Web Page

The Uni Library web page is the gateway to most of the resources that students will need. Or, students may wish to launch their searches from the University Library web page.

Step Three - Online Catalog Instructions

The University Library online catalog provides access to the Uni High Library collection as well as a consortium of more than 50 other large libraries in Illinois. The catalog can be accessed here. For information on the new system and information on how to use it, visit the Voyager Online Help page.

Step Four - Online Databases and Reference Tools

The University Library licenses more than 100 databases which provide students with access to a huge variety of periodical and reference information. When connecting from off-campus, users are usually prompted to enter a NetID and password.

The Uni High Library web page connects directly to the databases most frequently used by Uni students. These include FirstSearch products such as Wilson Select Plus, Ebsco products such as Academic Search Elite, and Lexis-Nexis, an extensive collection of news and legal information. The Uni Library web page also links to the University Library's full list of electronic resources, which include many other databases as well as full-text online journals and newspapers.

The Uni Library web page has direct access to online reference sources paid for by the University Library. Here students can search for information ranging from literature and biography to college majors and admissions criteria.

The Uni Library also subscribes to reference sources that are only available to Uni High students. These include Encyclopaedia Britannica Online and the Accunet/AP Multimedia Archive. Ask the library staff for the user name and password needed to access these resources from home. The same user name and password are used to access NoodleBib, an online bibliography generator.

Finally...

The online resources and features of our library system are continuously updated and enhanced, so please check with library staff if you have questions or difficulties.
