Ekiben: the art of the Japanese box lunch

Fast food elevated to a high art. Picture thousands of commuters rushing into train stations, stopping first at food kiosks to purchase perfectly arranged, stylistically and gastronomically unique ready-made meals. Here's the delicacy you can purchase at Tokaido Shinkansen Gifu Station:

Is this a cookbook or a picture book? Reading Japanese cookbooks always makes me want to gain some expertise in preparing the beautiful things, but it's virtually impossible to do (aside from your very basic rolled sushi) without someone actually holding your hand to show you the cuts. Someday, maybe. I have the knives.
On a different note, how many people read cookbooks just for fun, other than to get new recipes to expand their repertoires? And how many people regularly cook out of cookbooks? These are the things I wonder.

It's definitely a picture book. No recipes, but there are general descriptions of the components of each lunchbox. If anything, the book is a guide to the cuisine of different train stations. I suppose you could plan your commute accordingly...

I, for one, find cookbooks fun to read, especially old ones. But like any other genre, some are better reading than others.
