The kinderlach

We've got two new books that tell very different stories of children's lives during the Holocaust. Mona Golabek has written a biography of her mother, Lisa Jura, a Jewish child who was spirited out of Vienna on the Kindertransport and sent to London to live in a hostel on Willesden Lane. It's called The Children of Willesden Lane (940.5318092 G562g). In contrast, Susan Campbell Bartoletti's book Hitler Youth: Growing Up In Hitler's Shadow (943.086 B285h) describes how a generation of young people became part of the Nazi propaganda machine. We hear from former Hitler Youth members as well as young people who resisted the call.
