Evaluating Web Sites: Sharing the Fun
Take your parent(s)/guardian(s) on a tour of the web sites you visited at http://www.uni.uiuc.edu/library/computerlit/evaluatingsites.html. Show them the high points AND the low points. See if they can spot the tricks!
If you don’t have web access at home, see me and we’ll figure out an alternative.

Dear parents/guardians,
As a parent myself, I know how difficult it can be to get students to share their school day experiences. In the case of this particular assignment, I have a special interest in involving you. First, I’d like you to know what is happening in this Computer Literacy 1 unit on web searching and web site evaluation. As you know, the Internet – while a valuable resource for learning – also contains a good deal of questionable material. We want our students to learn to be critical consumers. Second, I feel strongly that parents and teachers are in this effort together. Your involvement is key to helping students understand the importance of being informed users of electronic (and paper!) information sources.
Please be aware that one site on this list is highly offensive. It is included so students learn to read carefully and look beyond surface appearances. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thanks very much,

My son/daughter _______________________________________ took me on a tour of the web sites found at http://www.uni.uiuc.edu/library/computerlit/evaluatingsites.html. He/she helped me understand how to evaluate the sites for accuracy, objectivity, authority, and appropriateness of use for different purposes.
