After four years at Uni High, social studies teacher Jenny Kim will leave at the end of the current school year. She and her husband, John Kim, will move to Boston. He plans to attend Harvard Business School.

The first candidate in the social studies department's search to replace Kim will visit Uni today. Katherine Chuu will meet with students and faculty during lunch in Room 218.

Kim began teaching at Uni in August 2002. A native of Northbrook, Ill., she arrived at the school with a bachelor's degree in social studies education from the University of Illinois and a master's degree in education policy from Harvard University. Her teaching experience included two years at Mahomet-Seymour Junior High School and summers in Boston and Washington, D.C.

She quickly became a favorite of her first batch of subbie students (many of whom still think of her as “Jenny Yi,” her name before her marriage). Her background included such offbeat tidbits as a role as an extra in the Julia Roberts movie “My Best Friend's Wedding.”

On her first day at Uni, the Gargoyle asked her to recall the worst job she ever had. Her reply: “Greeting the mayor of Boston as a Berenstein Bear.”

Look for more coverage in The Online Gargoyle of Kim's departure and the search for a replacement.

“We are all very sad that she is departing at the end of this year, but we wish her well in her new home of Boston,” said social studies executive teacher Billy Vaughn in a schoolwide e-mail on Monday.

Ms. Kim is a gem and will do well in whatever position she accepts in the Northeast. Uni was very fortunate to have had her on the faculty, and students (and parents) will benefit from her expertise for years. Good luck from one of many subbie parents!
