Chess: Uni sweeps Stanford Olympia

Uni began the 2007 chess season with a 58-0 victory over Stanford Olympia Thursday night at Parkland College. Led by veteran players Gordon Ruan, Alex Zhai, Geoffrey Beck, and Alan Liang, the team hopes to outdo its eighth-place finish at last year's IHSA state tournament.

Column: Surviving the marathon of heat

Last weekend many endured the scorching temperatures and sweltering humidity, including those who were trying to complete the Chicago Marathon. The marathon was eventually called off due to the weather but not before a Michigan man died. Staff writer Jack Snyder describes his own experience in Chi-town helping his dad complete the 26.2-mile race. Along the way, he talks about what attracts people to marathoning in general and this race in particular.

Boys soccer: Uni ends regular season with win over Monticello; playoffs begin today

The host Illineks broke a 1-1 deadlock Thursday with five minutes left thanks to senior Jake Seeley's second goal of the contest, a fitting way to end senior night. Now Uni switches its attention to the Class A playoffs. The first round of the Monticello sectional begins today when 15th-seeded Mt. Carmel visits second-seeded Uni. The game will begin 4 p.m. at DCR Soccer Field No. 9.
