The Uni High basketball season is quickly approaching. In a little over three weeks, Kenney Gym will be filled with bouncing balls, squeaking shoes, and a ton of freshman who don’t know what they’re in for.

That’s OK though, right?

It’s Uni. We have a no-cut policy. That’s what makes basketball pretty laid-back. Right?

Well, I have a problem with that mentality.

I wasn’t always a fan of The Beatles. In fact, when I was younger, I thought they made annoying old-people music. That was, of course, before I had ever listened to any of their songs other than “Yellow Submarine,” and I didn’t even know that was by The Beatles.

National Merit commends almost 30 percent of senior class

Nineteen members of the Class of 2008 have been named National Merit Commended Students. Earlier this year, 15 of their classmates were chosen as National Merit Semifinalists. In all, 34 seniors earned either commended or semifinalist status this year, representing about 53 percent of the 64-member senior class.

Uni musicians ready to try out for all-district honors

Columbus Day isn't just a day off for 22 of Uni's student musicians. They'll be auditioning for the Illinois Music Educators Association district music festival. Last year 14 Uni students earned all-district high school honors, and three subfreshmen won junior district honors. Check inside for a preview of Monday's auditions. Next stop after district: a chance to participate in the all-state music festival in Peoria.

Collateral News has won over my heart … and attention

I first heard about Collateral News through a Facebook group that asked members of the online community to sign a petition for the Jena 6.

Super sloppy

According to my mother, I have the worst table manners in the family next to my dog, Susan.

A couple nights ago I went into the kitchen for dinner, sat sideways on a skewed chair at the dinner table with one leg crossed on the chair-seat, picked up a piece of broccoli with my fingers and began to eat. My mother was immediately disgusted.
