Gargoyle guide to the week in entertainment, Oct. 8-14

Erin Hayes and Kumars Salehi are back with their guide to the latest offerings in movies, CDs, DVDs, and local concerts. George Clooney as a corporate legal fixer and Cate Blanchett as Queen Elizabeth lead off the new movies, while "28 Weeks Later" seems like the best of the DVD lot. Erin heaps plenty of praise on this week's CDs, and she highlights two must-see concerts — and one of them is free.

Girls volleyball: Tournament champs set school record for wins, Skoza named MVP

The Illineks went 5-0 Saturday to win the Crusader Invitational and break the Uni record for volleyball victories in a season. Junior Rachel Skoza was selected as tourney MVP, and sophomore Michelle Wong was named to the all-tournament squad. The girls have three matches left before the playoffs begin on Oct. 23. Next up: a trip to DeLand-Weldon on Tuesday.

Cross country roundup: Teams finish regular season with Mahomet, Amboy meets

The cross country teams concluded their regular season today with the Amboy Invitational. Two days earlier they competed in the Mahomet-Seymour Invitational. The teams will now prepare for the IHSA postseason, which begins with regionals on Oct. 20. Both squads will compete in the St. Joseph regional. The Paxton-Buckley-Loda sectional will follow on Oct. 27. The state finals are scheduled for Nov. 3 at Detweiller Park in Peoria. The girls placed fourth at state last year and have been ranked as high as third this year. The boys are hoping to qualify for state for the first time since 1997.
