First person: Making the journey from oral history project to WILL documentary

Sophomore Maritza Mestre was one of eight Uni students who took the raw material of the Class of 2010's subfreshman oral history project and turned it into an hourlong radio documentary for WILL AM-580. The show will air Saturday at 5 p.m. and again Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. In this first-person account, Maritza talks about what went into producing the program.

The cards have been dealt … will I get a good hand?

Hours of sweat and pain. Days waking up before 5 a.m. Months of grueling work. And then, finally, it all comes to an end. Tomorrow morning the Uni High girls swim team will swim in their last meet of the season: sectionals.

Here's another look at what the girls cross country team had in store for coach Doug Mynatt during lunch today.

Five minutes: A small sacrifice for happiness

We at Uni have a lot of advantages over other schools. We get regular exercise in an excellent PE program. We don't have nasty cafeteria food. We have amazing teachers and quality classes that actually might prepare us for college.

Herbivores

I have been a vegetarian for about seven years. I started off by cutting red meat from my diet, but I still ate chicken and fish. Soon, however, I stopped eating chicken as well. I didn’t really like fish, so I didn’t eat much to begin with. Then, I realized that fish are animals, too, so I decided not to eat any fish either.

If you noticed a crowd in the first-floor hallway during lunch today, it wasn't because of a pizza sale. This time the congestion was caused by senior Michelle Mehnert and her cross country treammates, who had an appointment with coach Doug Mynatt. Check inside to see what all the commotion was about.

Hugging = detention

I just read a small excerpt in the Living section of The News-Gazette that told the story of a girl in middle school receiving two days of after-school detention for hugging.

Hugging?

Yeah, "What the heck" was my first thought, too.

A new hairstyle in store for coach Doug Mynatt today, thanks to one of his runners

When senior Michelle Mehnert finished third overall at the Class 1A girls cross country state meet on Saturday, she did more than set a school record for highest finish by a Uni runner in the IHSA finals. She also won a challenge with coach Doug Mynatt: If she placed in the top five, he would allow her to shave his head. Today he pays up.
