Boys basketball: Payback! Uni defeats St. Thomas More by 18

[UPDATED] A year after losing to crosstown rival St. Thomas More by 22 points, the red-hot Illineks downed the Sabers 63-45 tonight at Kenney Gym. The win raises the team's record to 6-0, just one victory shy of matching the best start ever by a Uni boys varsity basketball team. The Illineks can tie that mark with a road victory Saturday against Fisher.

Why do we yawn?

The number of sleep-deprivation articles that have been recently written made me ask the question: Why do we yawn? Is it because we are feeling tired or really bored? And why is it that whenever you see someone open his or her mouth wide to yawn that you also feel the urge to yawn?

A sad era for gaming

I like video games. I like to read about video games. Whether it is reviews, previews, or even news, I like to keep up to date on games. To do so, I occasionally visit Gamespot.com.

Activism Club hopes showing of "Sicko" will spur discussion about health care

Almost 50 million Americans lack health insurance while countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom provide universal coverage for their citizens. But even the millions of Americans who do have insurance often find out their coverage is inadequate when they put in a claim. Michael Moore looks at the U.S. health care system in his latest documentary, "Sicko," which the Uni High Activism Club will show 7 p.m. Wednesday in Room 109.

I hate sports

I hate sports.

I guess that sounds weird coming from the mouth of the girl who plays sports all year long. I spend at least two hours a night practicing, and sometimes more when I have a game or meet.

I get to run suicides, wear sportswear, sweat, endure sprained ankles, and use my inhaler at least twice a day in exchange for a 50-minute free period at the beginning of the day.

Look for roses

Around 7 p.m. Sunday, I sat down to watch the BCS selection show, hoping that Illinois would be chosen to go to a bowl game. Around 7:15 p.m. the Illinois logo jumped onto the screen, telling me that the Illini were in the Rose Bowl for the first time in 23 years!

Boys basketball: They're good, but are they the best ever?

It's been an excellent start for the Uni boys basketball team, to say the least. The Illineks won all four games of the season-opening Central Illinois Turkey Tournament — nearly doubling their opponents' point totals — and then beat Shiloh on Friday by almost 50 points. With the loss of only one starter from last year, the potential is there to have a very successful season. The only question remaining is: How good will they be? Tonight's home game against 3-3 St. Thomas More will go a long way toward answering that question.

Fetish properties ... what's up with that?

Yesterday, I had my first venture into the world of what fictional record-store owner Rob Gordon calls “fetish properties.”

Of teddy bears and angry mobs

When I hear of arrests, I usually think of banks, getaway cars, ski masks, guns, police, and Hollywood-worthy car chases (I have an active imagination).

On Nov. 26, Gillian Gibbons, an English schoolteacher working in Sudan, was arrested for insulting Islam’s prophet and for inciting hatred.
