Harry Potter event: Wizard Rock comes to Champaign

What do rock music and Harry Potter have in common? The answer: They will both be at the Champaign Public Library on Friday as a part of the Get Inspired! literacy program. Two "wizard rock" bands — Ginny and the HeartBreakers from Oklahoma and The Remus Lupins from Los Angeles — will perform original songs about Harry Potter characters.

Math Olympian Alex Zhai one step away from making U.S. Physics Team

Senior Alex Zhai is used to being one of the top math students in the country, having represented the United States twice in the International Mathematical Olympiad. Now, he's taken his place among the nation's top physics students as well, according to results announced by the American Association of Physics Teachers. Music awards: Jennifer Roloff wins Young Baroque Artists Competition

Senior Jennifer Roloff won her second major music contest in less than two months, earning first prize in the Young Baroque Artists Competition held Saturday at Smith Memorial Hall on the University of Illinois campus. Subfreshman Kathy Qiu won third place. They were among eight Uni students who competed.

What did you get?

Uni takes pride in its intelligent and talented student body. It boasts of high standardized test scores, a dedicated administration, and a competitive atmosphere. But frankly, sometimes the competition and tendency to overachieve can get a little annoying.

I'm only minutely corrupted

“The governor of New York has been linked to a prostitution ring.” Something about that phrase just seems not right. Maybe it’s the words “governor” and “prostitution” in the same sentence.

Either way, when I heard that phrase, my first reaction was to laugh. Oh yes, another sleazy politician caught red-handed just like they always are. They deserved it.

You're going to wear that!?

Every day we get up and get dressed. We shower, style our hair, apply makeup, and spend a good amount of time deciding what the perfect combination of "pants, shoes, and shirts" is for that day.

We're girls. Some of us wake up half an hour before we have to leave, and some of us get up a good hour and a half before we would even have to get in the car: however long it takes to look good!

Poetry Out Loud '08: Kareem Sayegh places in top five at state finals

[UPDATED, audio included] Junior Kareem Sayegh chose an eclectic trio of poems to memorize and recite for the Poetry Out Loud state finals last week: a muscular tribute to a city on the rise, a flirtatious meditation on the cruelty of love, an unflinching look at the reality of war. The result? A top-five finish for Sayegh in Uni's first year of participating in Poetry Out Loud.

Column: I want to see the world!

In her 16 years, junior Rachel Skoza has never been out of the country. All of that will end in a few days when she begins spring break by traveling to the Bahamas. She hopes her trip will be the start of many similar experiences. Check inside for Rachel's foreign-trip wish list.
