Column: Dear Weather Dude …

Appalled by the weather lately? Anna Gooler feels your pain. In fact, she dashed off this missive in the hopes of changing our fortunes. We're not sure if it will have any effect, but if the Weather Dude has a sense of humor, we suspect he/she will at least appreciate Anna's efforts.

Kings Island adventures

On Sunday the junior class traveled by charter bus to spend the day at Kings Island amusement park at Cedar Point, Ohio.

Poetry from the Gargoyle's mouth: Artists and their craft edition

[AUDIO included] We've got the latest for you in "Poetry from the Gargoyle's mouth," with senior Erin Hayes reading a poem that she really likes called "one thirty-six a.m." It's definitely a thought-provoking poem with some cool images, so make sure to look inside for her rendition of it. Also, come back later this week for more poetry about artists and how they feel about their craft.

A letter to the Weather Dude

Dear Weather Dude,

I have lived in Champaign all 15 and 3/4 years of my life, and never have I seen such strange weather as I saw today.

Of course I know that in C-U the outside temperature changes more often than Britney Spears’ marital status, but come on.

Gargoyle guide to the week in entertainment, April 28-May 4

The best bets this week seem to be in the new CD and video game releases. Laura is looking forward to the latest album by The Roots, "Rising Down," while Gordon gives a thumbs-up to "Grand Theft Auto IV." Carl Zielinski makes a guest appearance as arbiter of the new movie releases, while Kumars checks out the DVD stash. Sindha is back with her look at live music in C-U.

First person: A refreshing cultural experience right here on campus

It's easy to become isolated from the rest of the University of Illinois campus when you spend so much time here at Uni. But there's a rich menu of campus activities and events to choose from if you want to be adventurous. Jie Han found that out Saturday when she spent the evening at the U of I's Fete Fantastique Francophone.

Editorial: Expanding the pool

To diversify, Uni must increase the number of minority applicants — and here are a few ideas

Reputation aside, Uni actually does a good job of admitting minority applicants. For the incoming Class of 2013, 36 percent of the Hispanic applicants, 50 percent of the African-American applicants, and 100 percent of the Native American applicants were admitted. The problem is that the number of minority applicants is so small that even those percentages don't make much of a dent. If Uni is serious about diversifying, it will have to find ways to expand the pool of prospective students. The senior editors recently interviewed the dean of admissions at Amherst College, and they came away with a few ideas.
