Spirit Week '08: Look Ugly Day (plus human pyramids and chariot races)

While Look Ugly Day was not much uglier than usual, lunchtime activities flourished during the popular human pyramid competition and “chariot races” in Uni Gym. Many students joined in the activities, encouraged by cheers from classmates and candy prizes from Student Council.

The subfreshman boys will face second-seeded Champaign St. Matthew on Thursday night in the Class 8-2A Regional 4 title game. Uni has already won two regional games, including an 11-point upset of No. 1 seed Chrisman Scottland. The championship game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Column: Addicted to shopping … online

"People are always talking about how the Internet transformed their lives," writes Elaine Gu. "They say that it revolutionized the way information is spread and increased the rate of communication. However, an emerging trend that people often forget to mention is online shopping." And Elaine is just the person to write about that subject. Read on and find out why.

Spirit Week '08: Twin Day

After a bit of a slow start on Monday, Spirit Week kicked into high gear today with the always-popular Twin Day, along with a hippity-hop race and eating contest during lunch. Check inside for photos and for the remainder of the week's activities.

Boys basketball: Showdown with Decatur Christian will have to wait

Tonight's game in Decatur was canceled because of bad weather. Uni, which is seeking its fourth straight conference title, is 16-5 overall, 6-1 in the ECIC. Decatur Christian is 17-2, 8-0. Back on Jan. 4, the visiting Warriors handed the Illineks their only conference loss of the season, a 63-60 overtime defeat at Kenney Gym.

Column: Do you really want to be remembered for that?

The reputations we create for ourselves often remain fixed even after we've left our old habits behind. Lizzy Warner asks: Why don't more students keep that in mind when they do things that will make themselves cringe when they look back a few years later?

Girls basketball: Illineks beat Decatur Christian, approach .500 as season winds down

Uni edged to within one game of .500 Monday night with a 61-45 victory over host Decatur Christian. In the meantime, listen to Emily's conversation and get an inside look at the school.

Film review: "27 Dresses"

Jane, played by Katherine Heigl, has been in 27 weddings, none of which were her own. Undeterred, this young woman is sure that, eventually, her day will come. Sound like a formulaic chick flick? Sure, but that doesn't stop Sarah Pfander from recommending it.

Spirit Week '08: Animal Day

Spirit Week began today with the theme of Animal Day. If the participation was underwhelming — as Student Council executive president Micah Berman put it in an e-mail to students and faculty, "I didn't see too much school spirit around today." — not to worry. Tuesday's theme is Twin Day, which always brings out the cleverness in Uni students and faculty.

Column: Who said spending too much time on the Internet was bad for you?

Don't tell Jie Han that time spent on the Web is time wasted. Her experience with virtual communities such as Gaia Online proves otherwise. "If only the real world were like Gaia Online, then I would be extremely happy," she writes.

Boys basketball: Everything in place for title showdown with Decatur Christian

Thanks to junior Malcolm Taylor's game-high 25 points against Buckley Christ Lutheran on Friday, the stage is set for the biggest Uni boys game of the season. Taylor led the visiting Uni JV to a 46-33 conference victory over the BCL varsity. The win, which counts as part of Uni's East Central Illinois Conference record, keeps the Illineks on track to earn at least a share of their fourth straight ECIC title. Uni (16-5, 6-1) will be on the road Tuesday to play conference leader Decatur Christian (17-2, 8-0).
