Poem: The Dog Came Down

The dog came down and tripped on the stair
on his way into the living room
When he fell he did not care —
He dashed ahead without affliction

No obstacle of any magnitude
could distract him from his ambition —
Such a pleasant insouciant attitude
can in life give us much latitude

His only care, and his greatest foe
was the tail that sticks from his posterior —
He would chase and fight it so,
only to find that it was his superior

I offered him a moist, paunchy treat —
he quickly indulges, and continues his chase
of an enemy, so elusive, that will bring
nothing but tribulations — this is sure to be the case

Through persistence and obduration
he meets nothing but failure —
Despite this derelict, his evanescent melancholy
turns to new determination

A squirrel sneaks across my deck with conniving
eyes that are pleading my dog to take action —
New opportunity and his strength of heart
turn to new satisfaction
