Freshman Karen Han won first place for piano in the senior division (grades 9-12) of the Sigma Alpha Iota Sixth Annual Solo Music Competition. Freshman Jason He won honorable mention for piano in the senior division.

Han will receive a check for $100. She won first place in her division at last year's contest.

The competition took place April 1 at the Music Building on the University of Illinois campus.

A number of Uni students from different grade levels competed besides Han and He: subfreshman Maria Gao (voice and piano); freshman Alan Liang (violin); sophomore Michelle Gao (piano); and senior Rose M. Kory (voice).

There were three judges for piano playing, and pianists were judged on tone quality, intonation, rhythm, technique, interpretation, and other performance factors, such as memorization. Pianists could earn a total of 30 points.
