A new type of math class

The sophomore Algebra 2 class is being moved to Siebel Center, instead of taking place in Room 209, situated conveniently in the Uni building.

The reason was just revealed to us. Instead of doing math problems in class in our notebook, we are going to be using notebook laptops. No more taking it easy in math class while everyone else does practice problems. The teacher will now be able to view all the problems that we have completed in class.

Of all the things that have been moved online, or just onto a computer, I never thought math class would be one. Sure we use Mathematica once in awhile, but not every day. I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks math class is going to be very different this year.

But despite this, I’m kind of looking forward to this change. It will be nice to be accredited more accurately for your class work. Furthermore, it will now be easier to get feedback on your work. A wrong procedure will be quickly pointed out.

Neatness is also an advantage. Straight lines will be straight. Squares will have all equal sides. Graphs might actually be accurate for once. This makes for a happier math teacher (hopefully), and a better experience when reviewing these problems for tests.

But there is also the issue of having to do everything on the computer. What if the night before a big test your computer breaks? Or your Internet is down? There is no way to retrieve your work.

Despite the unreliability of computers at times, I think this is a change for the better. I think that students and teachers will both benefit. Unless, of course, you enjoy hearty conversations during math class. If that is the case, you might have a little problem.

Thanks Isaac

Thanks Isaac, that was my bad.

Happier Math Teacher

Actually, we're doing this in two sections of Algebra 2, one section of Algebra 1, and in at least Spanish 1 (I'm not sure about Spanish 2... maybe an astute reporter could jump on this!). Ultimately, the project is related to thesis work. The "Big Brother" aspect (in which the teacher can keep track of your individual pen strokes, and watch what you're doing while you're doing it) is awaiting approval by the campus IRB (I'm not sure I have the right acronym... again, grist for reporters). The duration of the "experiment" is not certain; I have been assured it will continue for the current semester (once IRB approval is granted), but don't know what might happen next semester.

Not that we needed it, but this project will provide some extra workload for Mr. Bild, Ms. Finch, and myself--we have to modify our class prep, and nag a little more about keeping the room neat and tidy (I love to nag, though, so this won't be a problem for me).
