Drinking and drugs: A big disappointment

I like to think that I know my classmates pretty well. But apparently I don't.

Remember subbie year? Bliss. Innocence. We were totally naïve. This is my fourth year at Uni, and there is no doubt that I've noticed changes in my classmates. Some huge things that people seemed to have discovered over this past summer are alcohol and drugs.

I knew these addictions existed at Uni, but never would I have imagined my own classmates falling into the trap of what at first seems good fun, but always ends with pretty harsh consequences.

I'm 100 percent against any kind of alcohol and drug abuse for any age group. Both are completely unnecessary for having a good time, and never contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Why is it fun to get drunk or high?

Sure, it makes you feel good. It's a social thing, present at many parties. It’s even funny to watch your drunken friends do stupid things.

But what if someone gets hurt? What about alcohol poisoning? What if it becomes an addiction? I am very concerned about my peers who are getting involved in these kinds of things, especially since it is our junior year and most people are getting their driver’s licenses.

Everyone is aware that licenses and alcohol are a deadly duo.

I feel like I don't know many people who I was close to previously, even last year. It seems like once a group of friends start having a little fun each weekend getting drunk, they shut others out to ensure that there is no chance they'd get in trouble.

Uni students are especially smart about this: It may be possible that it's easier for us to get away with more things just because we know how to be careful about it.

The more I hear about my peers and drinking, the more disappointment I feel. Driving while under the influence is, not to be too harsh, truly disgusting and just plain stupid.

Unfortunately, good people are doing not so good things.

So before you even consider going to that awesome party this weekend, please think about what could happen to you or your friends. Think about the consequences involved, and be responsible!

I agree.

I completely 100% agree with you. It's stupid and irresponsible and these people don't realize what kind of effect they're having on their lives. It may not be a big deal right now, but they're totally risking their futures and losing or at least disappointing and disgusting smart friends who have to sit back and watch as it's happening, and no matter what they say, there doesn't seem to be anything they can do about it.
Good blog entry.

agreed

Good call, Skoza. And if you people out there aren't thinking about your own lives, the lives of others, and the lives of the mothers, fathers, sisters, uncles, ex-girlfriends, accountants, babies, puppies, etc. on the road, at least consider the very harsh legal ramifications of getting caught. Be smart and be safe, guys.
