Welcome, Guest!

The right of way

I was standing with a friend on a corner near my house. We were having an intellectual discussion, by which I mean slandering our peers. All was well. But then, an ugly yellow car drove through the intersection, very slowly, with the windows down, and threw what looked like wadded-up paper balls out the window at us.

“Oh,” I thought, “this is just like subbie year Japanese class.”

Until the paper balls cracked open on the ground near our feet and started oozing yolk.

I was a bit mad, even though the random loser girls had missed; throwing eggs at strangers is just one of those things that my mother told me not to do.

Maybe it was karma, and we got what we deserved. Still I’ve seen plenty of people being incredibly rude to pedestrians while in their vehicles.

I was standing outside of our own school last year with a different friend when some jerk driving down Springfield Avenue in a beat-up green Volvo screamed at a middle-aged man walking down the street “HEY, YOU’RE BALD!”

This comment seemed completely unnecessary. This man did not even have a stupid-looking hat or bad comb-over, so it wasn't like he was in denial of a problem. I’m sure he was aware of his own balding, and if I remember correctly, the driver's hair wasn't really that great anyway.

I've heard similar stories from other people. And while I don’t have my drivers license yet (even though I really SHOULD, if only Jesse White would find another group of people who can’t legally vote to beat up on us teen drivers), I will try to remember that just because drivers can get away with it, drive-by eggings and making 55-year-old men insecure is not a nice way to share the road.
