FreeRice is going to make me smarter
Published: Wednesday, November 28, 2007 - 10:25pm
Today was my first time on FreeRice. The Web site consists of a vocabulary game, and each correct answer rewards you with a donation of rice to end world hunger. I was immediately hooked.
FreeRice was started in October 2007, with a donation of 10 grains of rice to hungry people for every correct answer. Today, the amount of rice donated has been bumped up to 20 grains for each correct answer.
The rice is donated through the United Nations, and is paid for by advertisers whose names appear at the bottom of the page. The United Nations World Food Program then distributes it. Those accepting the donation pay no fee.
When I first heard about the site, I must admit that I was a bit skeptical about it. I figured that 10 grains of rice wouldn’t make that big of a difference, so I put my knowledge of this Web site aside.
Then, a few days later, I was invited to add the FreeRice application to my Facebook profile. Excited that I actually knew for once what the application was, I added it without any hesitation. Once again, however, I completely forgot about it.
Therefore when I first went on the site today I was amazed at how easy it was for me to get addicted.
First off, the site is easy to use. The homepage already has a word out, and straightforward rules on the side, so you can immediately get started.
Furthermore, the words that the game asks you to define make it interesting in its own way. I remember when the word "teetotalism" came on the screen, I was a bit amazed that I had never heard of this word that was so fun to say. (It means abstinence from alcoholic drinks by the way.)
The site provides 50 levels of vocabulary. When you start you are given words from various levels so that you can be assigned a level. Once you are given a level, every three correct words in a row will move you up a level.
There are even visuals of the rice you are “winning” with every word answered correctly. It is hard to explain the satisfaction of not only getting the word right but also seeing the bowl fill up with rice.
I really encourage you to just take five minutes out of your day to look at this site. You’ll get a chance to help the world without even standing.
And for all those people who think that 20 grains of rice are too few to make a difference (I know I’m being a little hypocritical), just think of the even smaller effort it takes for you to move and click your mouse on the right answer. It is definitely worth it.

Free Rice!
I love that website!
best charity website
My sister was playing this game recently and I noticed they added new categories. In addition to vocab you can now test your knowledge of art, capitals of the world, chemistry, French, Italian and German vocab and English grammar. Some is a bit too easy to be fun but it's still a great idea (oh and I don't mean the multiplication tables - I've know those for a while now).
