If you think that Uni is too crowded, then you obviously have not heard about Richmond Hill High School in Queens, N.Y., which has twice as many students as it has room for.
According to a New York Times article about the school’s situation, the school was considered too big when it was originally built.
Now due to the need for more space, the lots behind the school are filled with 22 red trailers that hold classes and students. These already questionable facilities are also falling apart because they were only meant for temporary use. One teacher had to teach a class holding an umbrella against a leak.
The school doesn’t even have enough room in its cafeteria for each student to have an afternoon lunch break. As a result, students at Richmond Hill High have lunch at any period during the day, including first period.
After learning about Richmond Hill High, it seems hardly fair to say that the Uni building does not have enough room for all its students. Despite the necessary addition of extra lockers, the large demand for microwaves at lunchtime, and the classes in Siebel Center and Kenney, at least we all have classes in a real building. There is always room to walk in the hallway between classes. And even though we don’t have a cafeteria, there is still enough room for everyone to eat lunch at the same time.
Here at Uni, we also complain about having an abnormally long school day. At Richmond Hill High, however, there is a possibility of a school day that is even longer than ours — 7:19 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. — so that they can fit everyone in certain classes. Imagine having almost nine hours of school just so they can fit everyone in. People at Uni stress out about having an eight-hour day even when most of us have a free period to relax and get homework done.
Despite the severe overcrowding, Richmond Hill High still received a C grade on its Department of Education report card due to the school’s decent standardized test performance. This makes you wonder what it takes for a school to receive a lower grade than Richmond Hill High’s.
So the next time you’re maneuvering around crowds of people to get to your next class, just be thankful that you aren't marching to a leaking trailer.
