Last night, when I returned home after driving to Savoy for food, dropping my brother off at the Centennial/Central football game, and checking two bookstores before finding "The Age of Lincoln" for my American History Seminar class, I was pretty tired. Tired enough that when I turned on the TV and realized that I was watching a commercial break on CNN, I didn't even feel like changing the channel.

But I am so glad I didn't.

After allowing a few commercials to wash over me with no effect, one thing finally penetrated my weary haze. It was a familiar sound, a song I had known for years. Then, when the song registered in my brain, I jumped out of my seat in celebratory surprise.

It was "Stars," the most popular song of the now-defunct Champaign band Hum, being used in a commercial for Cadillac.

Today, I looked the commercial up on YouTube to make sure I hadn't been hearing things, and sure enough, it was there. Judging by the comments people have been leaving, it's created a bit of a stir due to Kate Walsh's sexual discourse (i.e. "When you turn your car on, does it return the favor?"), but I suggest that we all take this as an opportunity to celebrate Champaign-Urbana's local music. Be proud of our scene, guys. Appreciate it, and go out and experience it.
