Dali delusions

So, along the lines of talking about art, I just wanted to share with you an artist whose art I think is extraordinarily out of the box.

Salvador Dali may have died nearly 20 years ago, but his artwork still looks like nothing I've ever seen during my lifetime. Dali was born in Spain, and beginning in his childhood he created surrealist work based off his dreams and imagination.

His eccentric nature made him seem like a person just as odd as his artwork. Loving attention, he threw himself out onto canvas after canvas, painting images surely only he understood.

This painting is called "Elephants," created in 1948. Until I enlarged the picture, I was sure the two figures were giraffes. Here, Dali gives elephants a simplistic and elegant nature that naturally large, thick, clumsy ones wouldn't have. Their stature is fragile, and one false step would cause legs to snap and the mysterious hovering carriers on their backs to fall.

Now this one was surely from a crazy daydream. "Soft Construction with Boiled Beans" is the title of this artwork, which was created in 1936 and supposedly a premonition of civil war. It's easy to see where this idea came from. Different body parts are in a struggle against each other; one is pushing up while the other is pulling down. Even if it does look like it's from a different world, it makes sense.

One of Dali's most recognized and famous pieces is the melting clocks in "The Persistence of Memory." I think he meant to relay the message that time is often wasted away. In this particular place in the painting, time looks like it moves really slowly, as if you're in some type of doldrums.
