Welcome, Guest!

Of tunnels and fountains

Over spring break, I visited a friend in Pennsylvania. It was my first time flying alone, so I was a little nervous. However, it turned out to be pretty fun.

I drove to the Indianapolis International Airport first, then flew to the huge McNamara Terminal at the Detroit Metro Airport, then flew to the tiny University Park Airport in State College, Pa.

Apart from actually seeing my friend, the most exciting part of my travels was definitely the airport in Detroit. The terminal is huge, with the long Concourse A connected to the smaller concourses B and C through a tunnel.

Because Concourse A is so long, there's an Express Tram that runs above the gates. To get from Gate A64 to C5, I rode it to make the trip a little faster. It took me to the center of the terminal, where I then went through a tunnel, which, to my pleasant surprise, included a light show.

I found a few good videos of the Express Tram and tunnel here and here. I also knew I would want to show people the extraordinary features of this airport, so I took a few pictures.

The light show in the tunnel completes the traveling experience.

The beautiful light through these windows balances out the steep impending escalators.

This beautiful fountain has water pouring into the center from around the edges. You can also see where the Express Tram runs along the top.

I have spent Way too much time in that airport when a flight got cancelled and i have to admit that the train thing, the tunnel, and the fountain (talk about physics in use!!) are pretty cool and i'm glad to seee that someone else enjoyed it

Trip to State College

Hi Anna,

I totally enjoyed the trip thru the Detroit Airport with you. I have always enjoed the walk thru the tunnel with the light show. Last time I went to Illinois, I changed planes at the same comcourse so did not experience the walk. Which was good for me

I am so glad that you had a safe trip and had a good time with Lizzie.

Love you
Nanny
