Fans of terrible hip-hop were shocked to find that rappers Papoose and Remy Ma are planning to get married later this month. Not because anyone really cares about Papoose or Remy Ma, but because they’re planning on getting married in prison.
Remy Ma, who was recently convicted of assault, was a member of Fat Joe’s Terror Squad and is most famous for her smash single “Conceited.” She is being held in prison until her sentencing and could serve 15 to 25 years.
Her fiancé Papoose made the news public in an e-mail to MTV.com, where he encouraged fans to write short letters to the judge in Remy’s case, asking him to give her the shortest sentence possible, and sending such letters to LettersforRemy@gmail.com
Of course there’s nothing all that freakish about this story. What is odd is the trend of musicians being incarcerated for committing serious crimes, only to have the public try and rally to get them freed so they can continue to tour and produce their music. Remy Ma was convicted of shooting her friend, because a few thousand dollars in cash Remy Ma just happens to carry around in her purse went missing. Why would anyone want to rush to get her freed earlier?
Besides, in some cases, incarceration can be good for an artist’s career. Lil’ Kim’s TV show “Countdown to Lockdown” followed the rapper during her final days before she headed into prison, and it was enormously popular.
Shyne, a Diddy protégé, was convicted of a shooting at a nightclub that injured a bystander, but he still appeared on Usher’s “Confessions Part II” remix, with a telephone voice announcing that he was spitting his verse via collect call from Clinton Correctional Facility.
Such ridiculous publicity may make artists think they can receive lightened sentences, but efforts by fans rarely work in freeing artists any earlier than normal.
This particular incident may even be good for Remy Ma’s career, as any interest sparked in her upcoming wedding would probably not have been directed toward her career normally.
Even if she doesn’t gain anything from going to prison, she still shot her friend over something stupid. No matter whether or not she really looks “too good for this necklace,” thinking that you don’t deserve to receive some sort of punishment for violent crimes is way more than conceited, even if there is a reason.
