Welcome, Guest!

The world of music: A few things you have to hear

I have always had a love for music. Every since I've been alive that's all I could think of. Not just all rock or all rap — all things that sound good. Rock, country, alternative, hip-hop, pop, even polka; anything you put on I'll listen to.

So enough about me, and more about what you need to know. I have been able to listen to a wide variety of unknown and about-to-be known artists that I know someone will love.

Lady GaGa

So I'll take no time by putting out a name that you might know, Lady GaGa. Many girls who have heard GaGa's single "Just Dance" have fallen in love with this go-go singer from New York.

Having taught herself piano at the age of 4, Stefani Germanotta has become a known commodity for her techno/dance music. Now under Interscope Records, the label of Akon, Colby Oldonis, and Kat Deluna, Lady GaGa will soon become known to an even bigger audience in the music world.

Wale

Called "the sophisticated man's Lil' Wayne," Wale — pronounced "Wall-Aye" — is the real thing. If you look on iTunes you might find one song by him, but this rapper from Washington, D.C., has made hundreds. The reason he is like Wayne is that he has a great ability in making mixtapes.

With two tapes of high acclaim, "100 Miles & Running" and "The Mixtape about Nothing," the D.C. lyricist has become one of the top new names in hip-hop. XXL magazine named Wale one of the top 10 of the new year, with his first album coming out in March of 2009.

3OH!3

Who said that nerds couldn't rock? That's exactly what these two guys from the University of Colorado have proved false. Meeting in their physics class, Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte decided to form a band using electronic beats and the power of rock.

Coming off of this year's Warped Tour, 3OH!3 were signed by Atlantic Records and opened for Snoop Dogg. These young kids might be the next big thing in alt rock if they will follow the steps of all-stars like Fall Out Boy and Gym Class Hero.

Basshunter

If there were an equivalent to DJ Khaled in Europe, the closest you would get would be Basshunter. This Swedish disc jockey is ubiquitous to clubs all over Europe. With his hit song "DotA," he shows how much of a dork he is. For anyone who does not know, DotA is an acronym for Defense of the Ancients, a map on the popular real-time strategy game "Warcraft."

Now that he has been shipped to the U.S., he is able to show us Americans how the Swedish get down. We will have to see if his work will be appreciated, but it's definitely worth a listen if you just want to dance.

What It All Means

Many people make music, many people get signed, but few ever are famous and remembered. So we will have to see in a year or two if any of the artists I've named are even still making music. We will just have to see how everything plays out. I just made an educated guess.
