Third presidential debate: Did McCain kick Obama's "you-know-what?"

In the third and final debate between presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama, McCain needed something big. All the major networks talked about how he would have to be at his best to make sure that his campaign would be able to rebound after a hellish last few weeks. He came out and looked Obama straight in the eye and thus began the debate.

So was McCain able to get his home run in the ninth inning? Sadly, no.

McCain came out using the same techniques that he has used in the past debates. I was excited to see if McCain would come out and whip Obama senseless, but again he came with negative attacks and coined the new popular culture reference, "Joe the Plumber."

Who is Joe the Plumber? He is a plumber who sees that because of his new business he will have to pay taxes under Obama's tax plan. But why talk about this one plumber? It's a major part of McCain's campaign with the attempt at Reagan's "Let me tell you a story," using stories and terms like Hockey Mom, Joe Sixpack, and now Joe the Plumber. He is trying to be the great leader of the old Republican Party but is failing to reach Reagan's ability.

Also, he offered one of the oddest and most untruthful quotes of either campaign: "Sarah Palin is a role model for every woman." This comes almost a week after an official report declared that Palin "unlawfully abused her power" as governor in connection with her effort to get her former brother-in-law fired as a state trooper.

The definition of a role model is "a person who serves as a model in a particular behavioral or social role for another person to emulate." No matter if you're a man or a woman, you would be able to see that this is not the type of person you should try to emulate (unless you are talking about her "stylish" shades).

However, Obama tonight did not have his strongest debate by far. He was more laid back and tried to reach the independent more than anything else. I wanted to watch the debate to see these two great politicians go at one another and tell their differences on these issues and how they will affect and change our country for the better.

Obama, tonight, might have had the closest thing to a draw, but it seems that he reached more independents than ever before. He left the constant pointing for McCain and talked straight into the camera to the American public.

On CNN, if you have seen this, they have a group of undecided voters from Ohio who rate each second of what each candidate says or does, from a look to a long ramble. At the beginning of the debate, McCain came back and led the crowd, but after the first 30 minutes it was obvious that McCain's thunder fell. Also "Joe the Plumber" only resonated with one of the 25 Ohioans. By the way, Joe is a plumber from Ohio.

Tonight was the best debate due to the questions that were asked, but I think that both candidates could have done much better. They could have been clearer and closer to the point.

All in all, I'll give the win to Obama but only by the hair on his chinny-chin-chin. That makes the debate final tally Obama 3, McCain 0. (Oh, and if you want to count the vice presidential debate, put one more win in Obama's column.)

Hmm. Ok so I will admit I

Hmm. Ok so I will admit I only was able to watch the beginning half and missed the ending of the debate, but I really think McCain put a solid effort in and came off looking pretty well. They were close, but I might give it to McCain by the hair of his chinny-chin-chin.

BTW though, they should definitely start making Joe the Plumber figurines. I would buy one.

Interesting

Nice article Will. I got bored trying to watch the debate. You know, because the whole thing was, "Well, that's funny, Senator, but you're wrong."

And, as to your point about Reagan...McCain can try all he wants, and so can Obama, and so can you if you ever run for Prez, but no one will ever reach Reagan's caliber of speech-making: We didn't call him "The Great Communicator" for nothing.

I give you the phrase: "Mister Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
Cheers!
