"Gossip Girl"

Tags:

A few days ago I encountered one of my classmates reading an installment of the "Gossip Girl" series.

The Gossip Girl books, written by Cecily von Ziegesar, follow the story of several teens living the high life in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The story is narrated by an anonymous character who goes by the name Gossip Girl and keeps an online blog about the lives of the main characters.

Having read most of the books myself, I stopped to ask this classmate what she thought of the book. As soon as I mentioned the book, many female heads turned in my direction and some even walked over to join the conversation.

Some days later I saw someone else reading another Gossip Girl book, and I stopped to ask the same question. Surprisingly I got the same result. It was then that I realized how many people had actually read the series and enjoyed it.

In general, these books seem to be frowned upon and seen as trashy novels that promote poor ideals. Even when I was reading them, there were times when I felt a little embarrassed. This is why I was surprised about the number of girls in my class who had read the books and liked them. Many admitted that once they had started, they had to put everything else aside until they finished.

If you are still in denial of the popularity of these books, just look at the impact this series has had. A TV show based on the books has just started this fall.

Even Uni has been affected, with its very own gossip girls (yes, there have been multiple ones), who even went as far as naming the most attractive girls and guys in each class.

One has to understand that these books are just like gossip themselves. Once you start, you can’t stop. You have to know more. So the next time you see someone with a Gossip Girl book in their hands, try not to judge too harshly.

Interesting! Apparently the series is causing some school libraries a lot of grief. Parents complain about them, administrators think they are inappropriate, librarians think they aren't suitable, etc. Do you think we should have some in the Uni Library? We certainly have our share of books that many would call inappropriate and unsuitable, but I've always trusted Uni students to be the best judges of what they should be reading. Are these books as well-written as, say, the Georgia Nicolson series by Louise Rennison (Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging...)?

My personal opinion

It is my opinion that everyone needs a stupid book to read every now and then. The Georgia Nicolson series is utterly hilarious, and I love it to bits and pieces. While I personally am not that big a fan of Gossip Girl, I don't see anything wrong with reading it. Although really, if you're reading Gossip Girl, I would recommend Georgia Nicolson a lot more.

I just want to say I love

I just want to say I love your boooks. But the only thing is the books are nothing like the show...but thats ok...I am on the 10th book and i just cant stop reading them!

gossip girl rage in malaysia.

i did know about this series for quite sometime but never rlly gives a damn to read it until my class mate made me do so. she said "u've got too read this. it's addictive!" then i said " gossip girl?? u can't be serious". long story short, i read the book anyway and i got to admit that it is addictive! i read the 1st book in just two days and the next day i went to a book-rental shop and rent the next installment of the series. now i'm only at the 4th book and can't wait to rent the 5th. this is insane i can't believe i'd actually liked this book cause i've always been anti-chicklit. my choices were more serious, drama kind of novels. but i guess everyone needs a no-brainer book to read sometimes. to read about th lives of rotten spoiled rich kids is stupid but it's fun. it's fun that u can talk to your friends about how bitchy and mean these characters are without feeling guilty because they're not real people. it's fun that u get to read about how screwed up they are and how damn pityful they are despite the fact that they have all the money in the world to buy whatever they want. cecily von ziegesar gives ordinary sane people like us to peek into the lives of the rich and spoiled kids. that's fun.

and i bet, soon all pre-adult teens will be addicted to. i'm sure too, that no parents will be too happy with that.
