Facebook Chat!

Everyone’s talking about it if they’re not talking on it. What is there not to talk about? It’s spiffy, it’s new, and it’s awesome. It’s Facebook Chat on Facebook!

Now while we are stalking each other with news feeds and comparing Jetman scores while trying to perform super powers or Harry Potter spells on each other, we can finally talk to each other. Well I guess we can’t really talk face to face, but we can talk as in instant messaging, but doesn’t that count as talking now?

Still not convinced? Still trying to defend your good old AIM account with its numerous emoticons and the great notification sounds? Well, can your AIM account make pretty pink hearts after typing "<3"? Can your AIM account show a hopefully attractive and maybe even glamorous picture of yourself while showing your status at the same time? I don’t think so.

Even harder to believe is that Facebook Chat is actually a lot simpler than AIM. Gone are the cute screen names that people picked out in their preteen days but are too lazy to change. Gone are the obnoxious notification sounds that immediately alert your parents that you are not actually doing your homework. Gone is the flashing of orange and blue for a PC or the bouncing up and down to alert you of a new message.

Facebook has successfully saved itself once again from becoming the dreaded MySpace. People have recently learned to press ignore to the daily deluge of application invitations, and writing on people’s wall has gradually lost its excitement.

With Facebook Chat, people can finally have private discussions that don’t span over a couple of hours if not days.

Unfortunately with a Facebook application there is always a way to stalk. Now you can see exactly when a friend is online, and if a friend you are chatting with does something you immediately get notified during your chat.

But this seems like the only bad feature that I can pinpoint on the spur of the moment. Just over the last 15 minutes that I’ve started using it, I’ve already developed a strong appreciation for it.

It's simple, it has pretty pink hearts, and you don’t have to open a separate application to use it. My computer is going to celebrate its seventh birthday in a few months and starts freaking out when more than three applications are open at once. Now I can successfully write something in a Microsoft Word document, listen to some music, and look at stuff on the Internet all while talking to people.

Thank you Facebook for making a parent's worst nightmare come alive. Multi-tasking has never been so easy.
