Summer reading

As the summer fast approaches, I have been continually looking forward to summer reading. Last summer, I think I only read two books excluding the required summer reading for English. So this year, I really want to spend more time immersing myself in fine literature.

However, I am torn apart as to what kinds of books to read. Part of me wants to put three years of really good English classes at Uni to use and focus on more intellectually taxing material. But the larger part of me is tired from reading and analyzing various texts throughout the school year and wants a few easy reads instead.

For now, the easy reading part of me is winning out. Lately, I have been reading some of those fantastic series of books that I loved in elementary school. I learned from my 8-year-old brother that the new big thing among grade schoolers is the "Warriors" series, about a bunch of cats that live in the wilderness and make tribes and fight each other. Good stuff, huh?

I read the first book of the series from my brother’s recommendation, and I was not as enchanted as I would have been when I was in fifth grade. But the conflict and detailed imagery given in the book was rather enthralling, if I must say so myself.

After next week, I hope to delve further in other fantasy books intended for younger people. It’s like Harry Potter all over again.

Go for it.

Valid point: though many talented intellectuals have produced profound, deep, and insightful literature, after a long school year of frantically swallowing information, such literature can seem daunting, didactic, and even dull. I personally beleive in two genres: that of educational literature, and that of entertainment. It is wrong to completely discount novels for immature content and elementary vocabulary. As students who can appreciate literature for its insightful view on life or for its entertainment value, nobody should be ashamed of indulging in less prestigious books. Books are for reading and not for scoffing at.
(Note: take this blog entry into mind when I perform a book talk tomorrow on "Poseur" by the author of Gossip Girl series).
